I am unclear on the dynamic/static nature when configuring frame relay. In what scenarios should the frame relay mapping and DLCI configuration be configured statically, and when should it be left to be configured dynamically? I hope this is making sense...

For instance, I know when using subinterfaces, the command "frame-relay interface-dlci x" is used to manually configure the DLCI on the interface. I also believe that Inverse ARP will be involked, therefore, there's no need for the "frame-relay map ip x.x.x.x dlci broadcast" command.

On links that have only 1 PVC, should the mapping and the DLCI be hard coded or should it be left to LMI and Inverse ARP?

Lastly, on a multipoint interface, should the DLCI be hard coded and a static mapping be configured? Or again, should this be left to LMI and Inverse ARP?

I ask this because, I am seeing several different configurations all of which are contradicting.

Thanks in advance.

I hate to reply to my own post here but...

It almost seems like that on point to point interfaces (whether they be subinterfaces or physical interfaces), the "frame-relay interface-dlci dlci#" command is used and on multipoint interfaces, the "frame-relay map ip x.x.x.x dlci# broadcast" command is used. Does this sound accurate?

Thanks

Hi, it's me again haha

Ok, here's the deal. The following is a quote taken out of the CCIE Bruce Caslow book regarding this issue...

"Frame-relay interface-dlci statements are useless in a physical interface only configuration because the whole purpose of the frame-relay interface-dlci command is to associate a particular DLCI to a particluar sub interface"

Now, I've got a CCNA book from Todd Lammle who's very first example of configuring frame-relay uses the frame-relay interface-dlci command on a physical interface.

Should I be worried about this exam now??
