I recently tried to recertify for my CCNA and failed badly. I am currently in school pursuing my degree in Network Communications and Management. I tried to study for this exam along with my school studies (bad mistake I think) I was caught off guard by all the simulations. I already have the Cisco Press books, and my job will supply me with the Sybex text and software. My question is: is it work the investment for the Transcenders software?. I am going to skip my spring term, and start from square one. Any other advise will be greatly appreciated

It depends on you. Some people get a lot of mileage out of practice tests, and it sounds like spending some time working with the simulators would really help you out.

I've heard the Transcender material is very good, possibly even tougher than the exams themselves. So if you made the investment of both time and money in their stuff, you'd probably have a much easier time with the actual exam. With that said, however, that's a pretty hefty outlay of cash if no one's reimbursing you for it (though maybe you could write it off on your taxes as professional development material).

If you're the kind of person who can really soak it up from reading, you shouldn't have to buy the Transcender software. If you can stand to (a) read the Cisco press books (and make sure they're for the current exam releases), (b) pay attention to the updated exam objectives as posted on Cisco's website, (c) read through some of the white papers they offer on the newer technologies and, (d) work with the stuff hands-on, you shouldn't have much trouble anyway.

I just went through the CCNP/DP recertification ordeal via the new "composite" exam, so I know your pain. Not only did I not remember a lot of stuff from 3 years ago, there was quite a bit of new material on there as well. I registered for two exams right up front, knowing I'd fail the first time but planning to use it to get a feel for the exam.

By the way, the Boson practice exams for the Cisco tests are pretty good, and you can get them for $39 each (200+ questions with answers and explanations/references). See http://www.boson.com to download.

Good luck to you!
