Layer 2 vs. Layer 1:confusing

| I am reading Wendell Odom's new book (640-821). On page 34 table, it lists 802.3 and 802.5 under both physical and Data Link layers. So, If I get a question on exam as to where 802.5 and/or 802.3 map on OSI layer, I would be very confused to answer .
Can anyone clarify this. | |

| The IEEE 802.3/802.5 specifications cover both the physical layer (such as wiring, connectors, etc.) and the MAC sublayer of the Data-Link layer, such as arbitration (CSMA/CD, token passing), addressing, etc.
So 802.3/802.5 do not reside at one layer, but at two. It would be unfair to ask whether they reside at just Layer 1 or Layer 2. |
