Hi I am new here and I'm looking forward to learning what I can from everyone and this site. The quetsion that I have is what direction should I take in the Cisco Certification proccess, or should I not. I am a senior and I will be getting a MIS with Information Security degree and my plan is to go for my Masters in Information Security but I also love networking. I think Cisco has a certifiation in that (CISSP????) anyway am I going in the right direction? Should I get certified oin CCNA? I am new to all of this certification stuff so I hope someone can shed some light and help me find the BEST direction!!!! Thanks, Laz

Ok the CISSP isn't Cisco but Cisco does have a security path as well.

After your CCNA you'll want to work on your CCSP and finally CCIE: Security.

If data security is your thing I'd highly recomend both the CISSP and CCIE: Security. The CISSP is going to give you an overview on the field and some of the more higher level (IE managment) concepts. While the CCIE:S is going to show your skills with Cisco's products specifically.

@Delphis

OK so this is the path I have to take, CCNA then CCSP and then CCIE: Security? Is there any others that are in between these that I will need or do they allow you to jump to CCSP and CCIE:S? Will this benifit me? Is there a job market for these certification? thanks once again!!!

Lazaraki,

Nothing you need to take inbetween the CCSP and CCIE Security but remember the CCSP is actually a collection of certifications. Once you get your CCSP you also have these Cisco Certs by default.

Cisco Firewall Specialist
Cisco IDS Specialist
Cisco VPN Specialist

You'll also take an exam on "Cisco SAFE Implementation"

So by the time you get your CCIE Security you'll have;

Cisco Certified Network Associate
Cisco Firewall Specialist
Cisco IDS Specialist
Cisco VPN Specialist
Cisco Certified Security Professional
Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Security

As for the second part of your question. Will these certifications help you in the security field? Yes and No. Yes the will help you but on their own they're not going to be worth much. You'll need some experience to back them, even if it's just basic firewall administration. But, that goes for any certification. You need the experience as well. This is why the CISSP is so highly reguarded, you need 4 years of experience just to take the test (3 years with an accredited college degree). Showing that if you have the CISSP you have at least some experience working with data/network security.

If you have any more questions, or if I wasn't clear enough on something, please post here and let me know.
