Darth is correct. SMTP uses UDP port 25, maybe that's where the confusion is coming in.

thnx to both of u but recently i found that pop3 uses both tcp and udp at 110. i found it out from www.iana.org. also dns uses tcp and udp at port number 53. i guess networking is meant to be confusing. u can always blame it for ur fault

well i was aware that dns uses tcp and udp 53 .... so it can take advantage of both reliable slower (tcp) and unreliable faster(udp) transport.
i suspect pop3 does the same thing though i am not aware of the specific conditions under which it will utilize each.

pop3 listens tcp/110 for connections and may send some replies encapsulated udp.

i guess this is one of those things that we overlook because it works and really aren't going to fully understand unless you really dig into the nuts and bolts.

Damn, I thought I was going to get through today without learning anything, and you ruined it.
