| hey guys, Can anyone clarify the thing for the crossover cable.
Crossover cable is used when you want to connect similar devices. Wires 1-3 and 2-6 should be swapped yep?
A rollover cable is when wires 1 through 8 are swapped from one side of the cable and is used to configure a router through the console port.
The thing is that I saw a question showing a rollover cable being used to connect similar devices, when i thought a crossover is used.
Crossover=Crossed Cable eyy
Can anyone please clarify?

First to clarify, on a Crossover cable it should be 1,2,3, and 6 where 1 and 2 should be crossed with 3 and 6. Depending on the implentation and the device this will decide which cable to use. Some hubs and switches have an internal crossover where you can use a standard 568a or b configuration, others don't and you need the crossover. ref to http://www.siriuscomputers.com/rj45.htm for details.
When it comes to Rollover cable this is usually used for terminal connections. I hop this helps.

| Rollover cable is not interchangeable with crossover cable. i.e. picture this: to make a rollover cable, cut and flip the rj45 connector at one end of a straight thru cat 5 cable 180 degrees and reconnect. | |

| A couple of points to remember. First, the rollover cable is a Cisco thing, not everybody uses it (I know this IS a CCNA forum, but it should be said). Second, not all Cisco devices use them either. For example, the VPN Concentrator 3000 series use a serial cable between your computer and the Concentrator. I'm not sure of the pinouts there, though. | |

| this is something that sometimes gets me...
whenever I connect a pc to a hub, switch, router, pc to pc, pc to nas, i always use 568b crossover. I've never had any trouble. Like djmaplethorpe said, some already come with internal crossover which makes it all a bit confusing if I am always using crossover for everything...then when the Q comes I'll mess it up....geeeh, great | |

| Please confirm if I am right.
PC -- Straight through -- Switch
PC -- Straight through -- Router
PC -- Straight through -- hub
PC -- Cross Over -- PC
Switch -- Cross Over -- Switch
Switch -- Cross Over -- Router (Not sure)
Switch -- Cross Over -- Hub (Not sure)
Router -- Cross Over -- Router
Although as already said, the port can take both on new equipment, either auto detect, or a button you press. |
