Hello,

Well I passed Network+ yesterday and now
I am thinking about going the ccna route.

Since buying a router is out of the question what router simulator(s) is best recommended taking price and quality into consideration? What about demos to try before buy?

thanks

I just downloaded a demo for Boson.
Anybody used therm before for ccna? I did use Network+ demo exams from them.

Might wanna check out routersim.com and look at CCNA SIM 3.0 I bought this and I love it. Even though I had a couple real routers I still used to simulator to simulate more complex networks that I couldn't do with my routers.

Also even if you do get a sim you might want to look on ebay and buy a cheap router(can usally find 2500 series for under $200)

I was just browsing ebay for cisco 2500 series. I did find many with reasonable prices. Some of the routers however do not come with cables and some don't have tthe ram. Is it hard to get the cables and memory seperatly?

thanks

You can build your own ethernet cables, Id recommend it. ( for fun you can actualy connect two routers with their Aux ports ).
Serial cables ( Router to router ) run for about $20 - $30 on Ebay.

ios, rom, memory upgrades are great exercise for ccna candidates.

in doing an upgrade, you reinforce book learning such as config register, boot process, tftp, password etc etc. all great exercises for the test and for real world job role for a typical ccna.

basically, in spending hte time to hunt down the items necessary instead of in a nice little kit, you learn actually how it is done. it may not be efficient, but it will burn it in your memory.

you ask if its hard to find those? absolutely not.

go to ebay

search for

cisco 2500 ios
cisco 2500 rom
ciso 2500 memory
cisco crossover cable
cisco db60
back to back etc etc

there will always be tons of them.

just another thing to get yourself familiar with if you are serious about cisco.

I have used both Boson and RouterSim. I like RouterSim better... much easier network visualization. You can design/modify your topology on the same screen that you configure the router in. Boson has you design your network on one screen, save it, close it and then open it up elsewhere after. Not that great. Their CLI seem to be fairly close in terms of commands supported. Neither of them are complete so you will run into limitations.

Good luck with your exam. I'm writing mine this week. Probably Friday... 4 weeks of studying, routersims and renting lab time. Here goes nothin'!

www.anthonypanda.com

He's excellent - He's in Hong Kong but delivers really fast - within 3 days to the UK, I'm sure the USA won't be any different.

There are plenty of other places.

I was browsing ebay and came upoun this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&category=28033

Would anyone recommend it.
I would to be able to purchase everything together to hope keep my cost down when I do actually buy a router.

Thanks for the help.

Would the 507 version of sybex router simulator lab be sufficient for the 607. I can get my hands on the 507 for free from someone who doesn't need it anymore.
