I have a Cisco 2524 router which I got off EBAY. when I turn it on it goes through teh initial boot, but then keeps saying it cannot connect to tftp://255.255.255.255/...

Is there a way I can reset it to factory defaults? I dont know how to get rid of this error..

enable, clear start, then power cycle the router to clear NVRAM

I can't remember the syntax of the exact command to remove the annoying tftp statement but in some earlier versions of IOS 12 that was a fefault command near the top of the config. Somebody else will remember before I fully wake up....

If your router is trying to boot from a tftp server, then you may not be able to get the global config prompt. You may have to practice your password recovery to get to a point where you can issue the command yankee stated. Also, instead of clear start, use erase start. then reload.

U also have to apply boot system 0X0 mode which boots from ROM to recover the password.....

I think you will find the following three links useful in assisting you in your quest to get this router booted.

you're right. I've haven't seen this in any of my books, though. I know that write erase command was used in ios release 10.3 and earlier, but I didn't know that there was another command. When you do clear ? at the privilaged exec prompt it doesn't list startup-config as being an acceptable syntax. So are we going to be asked questions on commands like this one on the test?

The newer command for "write erase" is "erase startup-config". U can see the comparison between them in the CCNA certification guide from Cisco by Odom...

I knew "erase start" replaced "write erase", but I didn't know "clear" was a valid alternative for "erase". Will commands like that appear on the exam since I can't find it in any of the books?
