Author home lab HELP PLEASE

I bought two routers off ebay to set up a home lab. They are both 2501 routers. I got a dte-dce crossover cable for the serial ports, thinking I could use that to get them to talk to each other. It ain't working. One of my routers only has two serial ports and a token port. I'm going to call it router0 for simplicity. The other has two serial and two a/s serial ports. Let's call it router 1. I have set s0 on on router 1 to an ip address of 10.0.0.1/30 auto-detect encapsulation ppp. The DTE end of the cable is connected to this port. I set router0 ip address 10.0.0.2/30 encapsulation ppp chap. I also enabled dce-timing. I have turned on rip, with the right networks, and entered the hosts. When I plug the cable in, the port goes up, with line protocol up. After the keepalive period, the line protocol goes back down. Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong? I tried using the cable on the a/s serial ports and the same thing happens. When line protocol is up, I can't ping the other router. The lights on the ports blink every once in a while.

Just to let you know, I'm only in the second semester of the cisco academy, and this is the first time I've ever messed with routers. I used the sims alot, but apparantly didn't learn how to make the darn things talk . So if somebody could help, I'd be greatly appreciative.

did you set clock rate?

Find an example in a book of doing something similar(I also have some examples in my ccna section). Follow the instructions exactly starting from scratch

What would you set the clockrate at? I know you would set the rate if you were going out over a leased line, but what speed does the serial ports on a router run at? I am attaching a log file where I captured the text from a show ver, show run, and show int for both routers. On the kaitlyn router the interface is s2. On the kassidy router it is s0.

You may be right about starting from scratch. I have been playing with them for a few days, but the crossover cable just came in the mail today.

jason did u check the cisco netacad? if u log on there go 2 semester 3 or 4, and practice, u mite have 2 individually set up. go thru hyper terminal, set that up and then set up each router!

i just passed semester 4 CCNA and i get an average of 90 out of practical

Jason
lets keep it simple to start. hook cables up (router0)(dce)s0 to (router1)(dte)s1.
(router1)(dte)s1 should be set to clock rate 56000. set your encap on both intfaces to ppp. forget auto detect just try and get the comm up first. on this router you show:
Serial2 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is CD2430 in sync mode
Internet address is 10.0.0.1/30
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 115 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec, rely 255/255, load 1/255
Encapsulation HDLC(this should be ppp)

if your encap is set wrong you will get funky problems!!

keep us posted on you rprogess, also Cisco sem 2 is basically hands on anyway you should be able to knock this out with your eyes closed by end of sem. good luck

place clock rate 56000 on the router with the dce end of the cable.
don't even mess with ppp yet just use the default hdlc.
try debug serial interface for fun to see the messages before and after.

I got it. I kinda wish larkspur would have replied a few hours ago, but then I wouldn't have figured it out myself, and probably wouldn't have remembered it down the road. The problem it wouldn't work at first (I think) is because I had the s0 ports connected. I still haven't figured out why it wouldn't talk to the s2 port, unless I had the cable backwards. I wound up doing what david said and erased the startup-config, then reloaded and started with the setup. All I did was set the port ip addresses and the clock rates. However, I set the clockrates on the s0 port instead of the s1 port. Thanks for the help. If I figure out why s2 wouldn't talk, I'll repost.

interfaces are interfaces that doesn't matter s0 s1 whatever.
you can connect s0 on one to s1 on another.

you just have to set clock on the interface that has the dce end of the cable,
since you're not connecting to an isp and a traditional csu/dsu. by using a dte/dce x-over you "become" the isp.
show controllers s0 or whatever will tell you what type of connection is there

this may help

So it should have worked with s0 to s0? I must have had something else wrong. I tried setting a clockrate on one interface after david's reply, but it didn't work. I may have set it on the wrong end. I'll try tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

R1(boot)#copy tftp flash

Use now the right/correct platform image file and I hope this will stop the WAR!

And this will bring you back to AD 2102 after a reload.
