Hey everyone... I'm just looking for the general consensus on what book(s) I should pick up to start studying for my CCNA exam. From what I've been reading it looks like I'll need some books and some router emulation software. Does this sound about right? Any particular text that anyone can recommend? Cisco curriculum? 3rd part?

While I have no Cisco experience to this point, I've been involved in desktop/server support for a few years at my company and presently hold an MCSE in NT. I figured though this certification would be a good way to get my feet wet in some heavy duty networking beyond the relatively tame world of Microsoft software and OS's...

Any suggestions on books?

Thanks,
Will Galway

U need to attend a CCNA course in order to get a systematic understanding of TCP/IP and hands-on lab exercises.

For software simulation program, you can go to www.boson.com for the downloaded emulation software.

You need alot of discipline to be self taught with this kind of stuff. I am finding out the hard way.

If you don't have the money to take these courses then I recommend doing it in this order:

Read a few cisco books. There are many out there.

Get a simulation or buy a router on ebay. Practice the IOS until your fingers fall off.

Make sure you have mastered subnetting, and all of the objectives for the CCNA exam.

Thanks for the ideas everyone... I did some poking around this messageboard to find the names of some texts to use. I decided to go with the Todd Lammle (spell?) book with the included router emulation CD. Cost me like $80, but that's about what I was expecting to pay. There are three of us at work that all purchased the same text. We are going to try to stay at a consistent pace and help each other as we go along in preparing for the test.

I know this test won't be easy, but I have all summer to prepare for it. Currently I am an MCSE (NT) and got through the TCP/IP test a few years back. So subnetting and OSI doesn't REALLY scare me- I just need to do a solid review of all of it.

Thanks again for the ideas

Will

Good luck on your studies.

Amazon.com, Half.com, and eBay.com are great places to look for CCNA study material. Paying full price for a study book is paying too much.

You need router simulator software. Again, eBay.

The Lamale book is good, but I think the practice/review questions are too easy and give you a false sense of security. Get practice questions from a variety of sources.

again, good luck!

Lo fellas, about to buy a book for CCNA. It doesn't include the router emulation, got one of them already. Not expecting to learn everything I need to know to pass from this book but I'm hoping its the best book out of the alternatives to get.

This the right edition ? 3rd ?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...3380846-5140427

Its only £27, there was another priced at £47 here http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...3380846-5140427 but I assume thats just the same book except with the emulation software ?

THanks in advance for any advice.
