Help! Taking CCNA this Friday 5/9/03

| Guys, I am taking CCNA this Friday. Ive been studying pretty hard. Doing all those questions from the Sybex book, cram exam and Sybex Virtual Lab.
Sybex Virtual Lab doesn't support lots of function. I am unable to practice Frame Relay, PPP, ISDN and DOD setup. I downloaded RouterSim 3.0 but the program close automatically after I type enable...
My question is how much will they ask about those topics above. I mean I understand it, but without actual command practice. I can't remember the syntex...
Please help! Wish me luck for this Friday.

| B4yaman3, thank man.
Anyone could answer my questions on the 1st post?
Thanks | |

| Exam is coming.... 2 more days, help! | |
| anchor40 2003-05-06, 10:32 pm |
| From what I recall from my re-cert 5 months ago (keep in mind, I took 6 other exams since then - DA, NP and DP), those topics were more functionality than config. Identifying what made a proper config, what the difference was, identifying the different reference points on ISDN - basically the Cisco exam objectives. The more detailed parts were covered in BCRAN...
I'm sorry if thisn't exactly what you were looking for, but I hope it helps.

| Thank you for the reply. My question was wondering if I have to actual setup those WAN stuffs on the sim part... Now I feel more confortable since you said its more about functionality
I think I should be ready. I am trying to master my subnetting and ISO.

| good luck let us know how you do!!!! | |
| PooPooPlatter 2003-05-08, 6:36 pm |
| Ok, I dont know if I am nervous or what? I just want to ask what I should bring to the exam, except my brain... like pen or pencil, paper... theyll give you paper right?
so scared | |
| tbird8450 2003-05-08, 11:43 pm |
| They will provide you with a piece of paper or a plastic sheet and a pen. You can write down anything you want on this sheet before and during the exam.
You are not allowed to bring anything else in with you.

| While your WAN knowledge will definitely be tested (FR, ISDN, PPP) the configuration simulations will most likely be basic troubleshooting and basic configuration.
Breath deeply, be confident, go for it!

| I doubt you'll need to do any command line for those you mentioned (PPP, ISDN, Frame Relay) - I didn't on my exam a week ago.
On the sims you'll get, you will need to be able to do commands such as:
sh run, sh ip route, config terminal, int s0, ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x, no shutdown, clock rate 56000, router rip, network x.x.x.x, ctrl-z, etc.
Hope that helps. | |

| I failed, I am stupid and missed by alot and my score is 681.... Just laugh at me. Well, there is a whole story behind it.... The test center made an mistake and gave me test to another person, so I was there for an hour waiting for them to figure it out, and by the time I was already really nervous.... I couldn't concentrate and my brain was emptied. I didn't have enough time to finish the test, still have 5 questions left.
My weakness is reading the questions quickly becuase I am a dumb asian. I wasted sometime trying to figure out what the questions were asking... especially on sim and access-list questions. I had 2 sims, one was with 3 routers and find out why it can't communicate with eachother. I wasted sometime there becuase I am not used to the way things go, then I figured out becuase it was missing 2 ip routes. Entered it and ping every ports, it works, but I didn't do copy run start and continue to the next question(don't know if I have to save config?). The other sim I just didn't have time to finish reading the question, but I know I have to set ip addresses on one of the routers's e0 and s0, network address was 192.168.71.0/28, have to use the 1st address avilable.... I have no idea what to set...... I mean I know what are the subnets by don't know what to use.....
I guess I am not ready as I seem most of the questions before on those practice tests. I did them all, but didn't have time to review the wrong ones...
I can't believe I failed it. I graduated with an IT degree, concentrated in Networking, I felt shame to tell people that.
Here is what I got:
50% Bridging & Switching
66% OSI Model & Layered Communication
40% Routed Protocols
55% Routing Protocols
66% WAN Services
50% Network Management
66% LAN Technologies
75% Cisco & Networking Basics
I am going to study agian, and see if I can take it soon.
People, just laugh at me!

| Please don't feel ashamed! There are many people out there who wouldn't dare even attempt this exam. You just weren't prepared - that is no crime! Thank God it wasn't a Microsoft exam that won't even tell you what your score was. At least your scores are broken down for you and you now know what to work on.
Nobody better laugh at you for this!
I understand what you say about having an IT degree with concentration in Networking, then having something like this happen on a Cisco exam. I'm sure you've learned much about overall networking in college, but unfortunately, the tests in college don't compare to this type of exam, in my humble opinion.
Give yourself a break and get back in the trenches! Good luck on the next attempt.

| PooPooPlatter laugh it off and give it another go. This time take a lot of time and study and you will conquer!! | |

| I agree with Clarkv! Nobody better laugh, because that's not what this forum is about. We as a group try to help each other, no belittle each other. I'll be the first to admit my mistakes (see my self-slams on my proof-reading for the subnetting stuff! ), and if there was some playful banter about that - great! That's fun!
BUT, the certifications are off-limits in my book. We all study hard, and do our best and some of us pass and some fail. No one is stupid for failing - period. I've failed tests before, some even twice. But I kept at it, and I encourage you to do the same.
The percentages from your results can be misleading because they are based on the number of questions asked on YOUR exam. You can focus on what you need to study to bring up those low scores, but keep in mind if they only asked 3 questions, and you missed 1, your 66% would be distorted from a subject that asked 18 and you missed 6.
As to your comment:
quote: I know I have to set ip addresses on one of the routers's e0 and s0, network address was 192.168.71.0/28, have to use the 1st address avilable.... I have no idea what to set...... I mean I know what are the subnets by don't know what to use.....
I'll write a few questions along those lines for my "daily" post.

| Don't worry -- just keep at it. I have students who do the same thing. In fact two student recently who scored 660 -- those guys can subnet and configure well but still didn't do well on the exam. | |

| That you did not pass does not mean that you are dumb. It's just that the pass mark is 85 % and you did not meet it.
As you prepare again make sure you understand subnetting to the point you can do it mentally. As you can see you second sim was partly a test of your subnetting skill.I had a similar sim when i took my and i was able to solve the problem.
if you canlay your hands on the sybex book by Todd, study the subnetting aspect of the chapter 3 i'ts very good
Study thoroghly and practice with a lot of questions

| you sound like you know enough about wans i passed 3 weeks ago. all you need to know is the basics of frame relay ppp isdn etc. isdn ref. points you will be asked on, ref. point Q. what you need to know is ip addressing and subnetting i found this difficult as was only used to class c addresses there will be questions on class b. there will be access-list questions also multichoice where you have to pick the correct commands from list i had a few of these. you only get basic qustions where you have to enter commands eg please enter command to enter config for int serial 1 or int is shut please enter command to bring up int ie (no shutdown)
i had 2 sims you need to read the qustion then note down relevent info ie ip addresses and ints. then go in and config correctly.
first sim said there was a link problem i did show run and noticed that in rip network the serial line network ip had not been entered just typed router rip, network 192.100.10.0 and exit then tried a ping it worked ,next.
second sim it asked u to work out ip addresses for the serial lines then config it, easy if u know your subbnetting.
make sure u know ip addressing, access-lists, lan switiching and routing and routed protocols.

| matiz, thx for your reply. you know? i had the same sims you got, but i just didn't have time to finish the 2nd one...
i need to find a way to do my multi faster..... |
