When I am setting up DSL to share the internet connection with all stations on my network?

Do you recommend that I Make one of the Machines a Router? What difference would it make if I go out and brought a router?

Why is it nessasary to have the router to share the internet connection? Can i just configure the computer that has the connection from Internet connection sharing or NAT?

Thanks in Advance.

Well right now I currently share my internet connection using ICS and I am thinking of getting a router because of the fact when ever the directly connected computer reboots or goes offline all computers on the network lose the connection.(not a problem if you dedicate a computer to this task, but then you might as well setup router software on that) Also ICS doesn't have as many features as even a cheap linksys router would have. And on a larger network there might be a performance issue. But I guess if you want to save some money then using ICS is good soution but you would be better off using a router.

save yourself the trouble and get a cheap linksys or netgear etc home router/gateway thingy.

if you get a linksys, you can fool yourself to think that you are using a cisco router!...

you can pick up one of hte older models for like 40 bucks.

ICS sucks.

if you are going pc platform, linux etc is hte way to go, put in a firewall and it is full function... ie near enterprise ready.

that has the same annoyance of keeping it up. netgear/linksys, it is a little box of 8x6... a PC is a huge noise maker and eat power and can't be off and blah blah blah

and honestly, if you have to ask, then the configuration of that require too much addiitional reading on your part. so save yourself some grief and get the cheapo box and look at linksys site for SOHO setup/config documents and examples etc. there is tons of those there.

But then how are you supposed to learn?

be pratical.

I can tell him the best solution is x y and z, which require 6 months of study in linux administration, then firewall, routing, etc etc etc and a cost of nearly zero, linux, old 486 etc etc...

what good is that?

the only thing that matter is getting stuff up and running... you do not learn at your leisure at the expense of getting things done.

why confuse the issue... this is like those posts in the general forum of ppl asking how to host a site... you get a lecture of the whole process.... then the ppl ask ... how do I set up a DNS server .... then the answer is oh BIND etc is neat... all is nice adn well...comepletly useless to the scope of the question... which is simply find a webhost and register the name to them... but the oh so helpful ;/ answer require them to learn x y and then z all in the name of learning heh?

edit: omg, you just posted a similar post on the general forum... laugh.

Lol yeah I know what you are getting at. But I was just mearly pointing out like in my case I want to do it so I can learn. Ehnn, what I mean was if everyone went by what you said then no one would learn anything.

Get the cheapo router in place. Then if you want to play with a PC as a router, for learning purposes, you can put it behind the cheapo router and play around without ruining the connection for everyone else.
