Author ipx routing command?
Townsend

I am trying to configure ipx routing on a 2501 router running ios 12.2(6a). In the global configuration commands the ipx routing command is not available. According to the Sybex book, it appears that is where it should be. What am I doing wrong?

If the router suppors IPX then it should hav the commands, frankly all routers should have it. IPX is widly used.

the commands would roughly look like::

Router>enable
Router#config t
Router(config)#ipx routing
Router(config)#int e0
Router(config-if)#ipx network x encapsulation encap
:: :: :: :: ::

whea x = network #
encap = encapsulation arpa, sap, snap , etc

This should work..
recheck ur rnning config..

hope this helps!!
later.

Thanks for your reply!
I tried these commands:

Router>enable
Router#config t
Router(config)#ipx routing

however the third command was returned with a carrot under the x. When I typed:

Router(config)#?

the ipx routing command was not shown as an option. Could I possibly have somthing else turned on that would make this unavailable or could it be it is not available in the ios version 12.2(6a)?

Not that I'm saying it can't be done, but from all the reading I'm doing it always shows 2501 routers doing IPX with 11.x ios'. The Sybex routersim I'm using also shows the 2501 with 11.x ios. I would go directly to the source and contact Cisco to make sure the (6) int he 12.2 doesn't have something to do with it, if it isn't showing up in the commands supported when you give the ? command I would say something is fishy.

Good luck, let us know what you find.

Do a show ver, and put your IOS version into the software adviser on CCO.

I would guess that the IOS you have is IP only, or IP plus.

People forget that when you buy an IOS it's upto you to make sure that it has all the features you need - a simple check here will confirm it.

Mat P, thanks for that, it's good advise.

Mat P,
Thanks for the advice.

I just went to CCO and and tried to use the software adviser. Even though I am a registered member it gave me an error message and wouldn't let me in. Is there any place else I can check to see if ios 12.2(6a) supports ipx routing?

I'm just trying to complete a lab exercise at home. It's not that I need to support ipx. I just want to make sure I learn as much as I can.
Thanks again for the help!

Mat P,
Thanks I would really appreciate it.

The number is c2500-ik8os-l.122-6a.bin
I have other ios images available to use if this one does not support ipx, could you suggest one that does on a 2501 router.

Thanks again for the help and advice!

Theres your answer - your running IP, Firewall plus IP Sec 56.

You need an image that runs IPX as I said before, I don't now how much memory you have but am guessing you have 10 Dram and 16 Flash which is the minimum for your image.

Ideally you should be running one of the enterprise versions which requires 16/16 - look for a JS in the filename.

Another alternative is IP/IPX/AT/DEC/FW plus which requires 10/16 - just look for c2500-dos-l.12.2-6a

You may be losing other features though if you enable this, you should really get your CCO account working properly to confirm you have what you need.

Mat P,
Thanks so much for the info. The routers I'm using have 16/16 so I'm off to look for an ios with JS in the file name.

Does Cisco require you be a custemer or at a certain level to use the software adviser?

Thanks again!!!

You need to be a regisstered user with a logon - you used to be able to register as a guest, I'm not sure if this is still true.

dear matp

can u point me to a link or some material, that teaches to correctly understand what the ios is capable of, by just looking at the file name.
