Diff subnets on same coll domain/segment

| gidday,
Any ideas as to why it is not possible to have computers using two different network addresses on one network? (I realise it is not sensible as the purpose is to logically segregate computer networks from one another).
The reason I could think of is if host A device recognizes at layer3 that the destination network address is different from its own and sends the information to the default gateway automatically. This would mean that traffic intended for another network would never enter the local network.
But I was wondering if no default gateway was set, could the sender then send a layer two arp broadcast, which would then reach all terminals on the collision domain (or a switched broadcast domain) and then reach the intended recipient- host B. The recipient would then give an arp response to host MAC address which should reach host A.
Such a situation would render the subnet practically useless but still any ideas why it would not work?
Thanks for any ideas.

| Well you can have more than 1 IP indirectly, using proxy servers(NAT software) . The rest of the workd thinks you are 198.12.13.4 but in fact thats the address of the proxy server and ur reall ip is different.
Simillary this can be done on Servers end.
They could have multiple servers running in conjunction with a gateway(DMZ etc) and it may appear to us that there is only one server.
Well, :-) i dont think i presented a good example ... sorry .
But NO its not possible to have multiple IP on a same work station. IP is provided by ur ISP, They dont give u more that 1 at a particular time, obviously u will get different IP each time u connect with them. Simple as that. Also the TCP/IP setting dont allow u to do this.
hmm.. dammn im lost!! |
