| Be cautious and aware when and if you buy the CCNA 3rd Edition book by Lammle.
After I read the reviews and how the book was represented on www.bookpool.com I bought it, once I received the book and started reading it I found that the simulator is only good through chapter 4 and the first part of 5. After that it doesn't allow you to do anything, you can only set hostnames, ip addressess, run rip and the likes. I emailed Sybex and complained about how I thought I was mislead on the books content. They explainedto me that after chapter 5 it was designed for a classroom environment and needed to be done on live routers (5 of them) which isn't very feasible for most people.
Just thougth I would pass it on!!

| I'd stick with the book and give it a chance. I read it twice and he also teaches you to subnet in your head. I bought the kit which included the Gold edition of the sims and they sure worked for me. Passed yesterday with a 913. The labs in the Gold version are more than enough to get through the sims, although I did think the sims were tough. You just have to look a the router configs carefully in the sims. They set em up with a digit off on the IP on my exam. If you can set IPs, rip, passwords...you're more than halfway there. I was worried that I didnt use the Wendell Odem Cisco book that so many others used but only the lame version that comes with ICND course. The Sybex book again sure seems to cover everything on my exam. But I have heard that the Odem book is an excellent resource to keep as well.
My two cents worth...actual cash value may vary. As I speak, I'm celebrating the pass with a George Killians Irish Red on my day off of work...Cheers!

| I took Lammle's course actually, which he taught very well. However, I didn't use his book as a study guide, even though I've only heard great things about it, until now I believe he also has routersims available for sale, which I thought were pretty good. I mainly used the training from his classroom, Cisco Press guide, and the Transcender's. I took the class with 2 other co-workers, who failed the test 5 times together. I passed on the first attempt. The only difference I could tell, was the Transcender (those cheap bastards didn't want to go in on the Transcender, so I paid for it myself and happily passed ) |
