A bunch of little questions.

| 1. Does a router continue to work while you are configuring it? I assume it would but the interface your configuring (if that’s what your configuring) goes down when you make changes right?...until you type no shut.
If I had a router this would be simple to see for myself, but I haven't bought one yet so...here I am.
2. I've been shopping for used equipment on e-bay and think I know what I want. For now, I'd like to have just one router and one switch...to be added to as needed (hopefully 2 more routers soon).
I'm unsure what a reasonable price for the equipment is though.
What I'm looking at now are:
Cisco Catalyst 1924 EN Switch
Cisco 2514 Router (2501 would be fine, but I'd like that extra Ethernet the 2514 offers)
The router seems to go for around $150-$300, not sure how much to spend on a switch. $100? $200?
Other switch recommendations are welcome as well, anything sub $300 is fair game. The 1924 was being sold in a ccna kit somewhere so I figured that'd be a good place to start.
Here is my 1st post on this so thats what I do know. This one is a little more specific.
3. I'd like to install the IOS on my new equipment myself, but I don't want to pay for it
Is there any way to get the latest IOS w/out having smartnet or buying anything else? No way I'm going to fork out that kind of money just for a lab.
4. Where's a good place to get console and DTE/DCE cables? How about the AUI to Ethernet thingy? Most auctions do not come with them.
5. When I ping the broadcast address on my subnet, I get a reply. Who is actually responding? Myself? Gateway? Everybody within the broadcast domain?
6. Finally, for the 801 exam, can I use shortened commands for the simulations and/or fill in the blank?
Thanks in advance for any info.

| 1 - Yes, it continues to work, including the interface you’re configuring, unless your configuration commands foul it up. For example, if you change a subnet mask, you get a new broadcast address. Does that break your network? It depends.
2 - Most consider that 2900 series switches (and higher) are better, but more expensive, especially if you’re planning on going past CCNA.
3 - Can't help you
4 - I get my cables locally, or make them myself. for transceiver search for “ethernet transceiver” + AUI
5 - Everyone in broadcast domain except you should respond. However there are a number of different implementations of ping. Most only care that you get at least one response for every packet sent. So when you ping a broadcast address, a response usually only means that someone responded.
6 - For sims, yes, for fill ins, probably if they're asking what command to type.

| 3. search cisco 2500 feature pack
ip only, if still available, should be very cheap.
who cares about ipx, no need to get enterprise with ipsec firewall.
it comes with cisco documentation cd, which is an essential item for cisco ppl, so get one anyway.
buy the initial 2500 from one of the frequent sellers for a bit more, they usually illegally put the latest and the greatest version... tftp, back it up ;/ then install it on all your old cheap 2500 with 11.x
then have fun and really learn when you try to update rom and memory, yay!! this is the real experience that make you servicable.
ebay, go to advance search, search for item, select *sold item only* or whatever, which displayed all the prior transaction regarding the searched item... you can then do statical analysis on what hte market value is so you don't over pay or under bid by too much.
cables, aui, just get it on ebay, cheap items, search for it.
I would instaed of initially purchasing 1 router and 1 swithc, I would go 2 router instead.... ccna switch, nothing fun or particularly challenging.
there is one auctions on it on ebaY, 35 buy it now price. old but really who cares as long it is 12.* cuz you can read and obtain all command usage updates on cisco.com, I am sure it is offer frequently or still gettable at a online e-tailer, so just keep your eyes open. oh if you do the advance serach for completed item, you will see that the dude can't move that at 35 from his prior offering on nov 25, so you know...

| I think I found one.
2503 for $159.
16mb ram/16mb flash.
1 Ethernet, 1 ISDN/BRI & 2 Serial network interfaces.
IOS 12.1 Enterprise loaded.
Included:
- 1 AC power Cord
- 1 Transceiver
- 1 Complete 3 pieces console Kit (3Ft console cable, CAB-5MODCM Modem Adapter, RJ45/DB9 Terminal adapter)
Comes with a 60 day warranty.
Doesn't have the 2 AUI's that I was looking for so I couldn't do all that much with it until I got a 2nd one, but it has isdn...will that be worth anything to me as I go on into CCNP stuff?
Also, I think I'm going to go with your suggestion, Mike, and not get a switch for CCNA. There is so little on switching that anything I may need to do I can get from my simulator. I'll wait and get a cool switch that I can use for ccnp and other stuff.
edit: There is also a 2501 for $145 everything else is the same except ios, 12.3(1) and no tranciever

| I won't worry about the specific,
isdn is/was? on ccnp, DDR, not sure if it is still there, go look at it.
anyway, its cool to look at another interface...
anyway2... isdn beside going to the interface would require you to purchase an isdn simulator, which cost 800-1000... not sure current price... so you will prolly not get to use it...
I have 2 2503, 2 2502 (token ring) so who am I to say...
just don't get caught up with the little stuff... get a good deal and worry about it later... ie even with 2502, you can still use the serial interface, and the 2502 are suually cheap cuz no one wanna get token ring... so all depends on how you utilize it. not like in the end you are going to have host on all the networks, you just need enough routers to simulate a network.
eidt1: the most important imo is enough routers, for specific issues with ccnp exam, such as ISDN and others, you can rent labs for like 30 bucks per 24 hours blocks, which if you read, studied, prepared all the lab material before hand, you can do all the labs and more in a 24 hour period. or buy simulator and sell it on ebay to recoupe most of the cost... be creative... like y ou can rent switch labs too if you do not have that many switches except 2 to parctice commands with... there are a lot of options to do it right.

| hey mikop, I'll sell ya my token ring switch and 2 more token ring 2500s which I initially purchased for my CCIE lab, but ain't no use to me anymore since token ring was removed from the lab..... heck I'll even toss in a Cat 5000 for the same reason...
money down the drain...
