| One that comes to mind is the Sybex CCNP Virtual Lab Second Edition. The cost from amazon.com is about $105.00. You can also pick us a used copy from amazon.com for $78.00 from discbks. I have ordered from discountbooks via amazon.com before, and they are good people to deal with. If you decide to order the Sybex product, make sure to get the second edition. All of the negative feedback is about the first edition.
The people who created the product for Sybex have their own website, www.routersim.com. They offer their own product, but it costs a lot more.
The Boson product appears to be geared towards the CCNA cert, but may have some useful feature for the CCNP courses as well.
Keep in mind that all of these products were created prior to the latest series of CCNP courses. While they will cover most of the current course requirements, some things may not be covered and certain commands will not be available. Since Cisco won't even have their new BCMSN book on the market until 3/2004, I guess the older items will have to do.

| I noticed something about the sybex ccnp virtual lab second edition the other day. It says it covers exams 640-901, 640-604, 640-605, 640-606.
When I check ciscos website it lists a different set of exams for ccnp. 642-801, 642-811, 642-821, 642-831
The ciscopress bcmsn book I have says its for 642-811, isn't that the most current test? Published 9-2003

| You are correct on the simulator. That is why I mentioned that the product was created prior to the latest series of CCNP courses.
The book you are referring to, CCNP BCMSN Exam Certification Guide (CCNP Self-Study, 642-811) by David Hucaby is one of several current Cisco Press offering. I got the date on the study guide from following:
http://www.ciscopress.com/catalog/ccnp.asp?session_id={45E04580-9B16-4824-A826-E1593C96FFC1}
I was referring to the CCNP Self-Study book: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN), which is supposed to be available in 3/2004. Sorry about any confusion; I should have been more specific.

| Sorry if I sound negative, but don't waste your money on simulators. I have had the chance to test all of them for free and they all are a joke; simulators are OK for CCNA but after that, they all suck. I know it is hard to find access to the real thing but you have to find a way. You should be able to practice most CCNP level tasks with three routers and a switch. Don't waste money on a 1900. If you are on a budget then an old 2900XL would be a good choice but If you can swing it, a 2950 is much better because it is very close to the 3550, which you will need to know if you are going to go further than CCNP. Of course, if you have the bucks and you know that you want to go further than CCNP, feel free to get a 3550. The 2900XL and the 2950 are both IOS based but there are some differences in commands for tasks like configuring Etherchannel or SPAN. A lot of the companies out there that are known for providing access to equipment for CCIE labs are now offering smaller racks, at a cheaper price for CCNP level labs. You also might want to consider the Cisco Press "CCNP Practical studies" series of books to complement your regular study books; these book have great CCNP-level labs; to do those labs, you will need to use real equipment. In short, find a way to use real equipment. Good luck! |
