I was wondering about the importance of IP Addresses on the internet.

If some one knows your IP Address to your computer, what kind of stuff can someone do with your computer?

I will gladly appreciate if someone would give me a list of what someone can do with your IP Address or a site where I can read up on it.

Thanks.

They can scan you for open vulnerbilities, use exploits, etc. Also they can knock out your internet by DoS'ing or even worse DDos'ing your connection.

well IP address is very important when you connect to a network spacially the Internet.
its like your contact address without which you won't be able to communicate. No IP address = No connectivity as simple as that. now finding out IP address is not hard. and if someone found out your IP address don't be worried too much. because...

1. If you don't have an always on connection probably your IP address is privided by DHCP. so if you log out and log in again you'll have a new IP address.

2. If you are using the latest patches for the OS and other softwares like anti-virus, firewall, outlook exp. means you are safe from all known threats. so do apply the patches released by the manufacturers.

3. If you don't have something called as a Trojan in your system then don't worry about your PC being HIJACKED for DDOS attack. but your PC IS vulnerable to DDOS attack. So run a good antivirus or anti trojan and make sure you don't have any.

4. If you are not using p2p file sharing
then its not that easy to find out your IP address.

so if you fail in any of the IFs above i think you should be a little more cautious.

ok i know you asked for the list of the things one can do with your IP address but Boulware5 already wrote that. if you have any specific questions you can go on....
