Author methods of getting ccna

hi, i am new to this forum.
I had an IT background back in school, but never worked in the IT industry before. Now i felt that i wanted to be back in the IT line.

I wanted to get a CCNA to get started with. Should i sign up for a CCNA/ICND course that cost a few thousands of dollars or just pick up a book or two and start reading?

How many of you out there learn everything from books alone and got the CCNA? Care to share some tips?

Any comments is deeply appreciated.
Thank you.

How much networking knowledge do you have? Some people find the CCNA quite hard if they don't have any basic network experience. If this is the case then I would advise that you look at the Network + first.

Otherwise it depends on how you have been able to study in the past. Can you just read a book and understand concepts? If you struggle with this it is best to do a course. If you can get to grips with concepts and understand stuff from a book then this is a much cheaper way to do stuff and I would recommend getting access to some kit or simulators.

Hope this helps.

Too many, and that's a real problem (search for "paper certification" on this site and you'll get my point)... Here's two tips:
- just try to understand the freakin' stuff, at the CCNA level it's not that hard.
- put your hands on a router and do basic configuration, that'd help; (try www.r1r2.com if you don't have a real router).

Good luck to you!

Cheers!
