hey guys, Im looking to get a 1601 router for my home lab to practice ccna studies.

What pitfalls should I avoid? how much memory/ram should it have? what kind of memory card and what is it used for? what IOS? What WICs should I get along with it?

any general tips regaridng the 1601 would be great, thanks.

The 1601 will take a max of 16MB of flash and I think 18MB of DRAM I think that the R series will take a little more DRAM, 24 MB. At any rate, it is pretty limited. I would go with the max on flash and probably the max on DRAM. Kingston makes reasonably priced memory for this series.

You can use the Cisco software advisor tool to determine your IOS version requirements. IOS version 12.2(x)is available for this router.

The 16xx series is pretty limited as far as WIC cards are concerned. Your slections are pretty much confined to a 1 port serial interface, and several ISDN and CSU/DSU cards.

If you have your heart set on a 16xx model, go with the 1605 R. At least it has two ethernet ports.

You might consider a 2610 or a 2611 to give yourself some more options. The 26xx series has two WIC slots that will take a greater variety of cards.

thanks for the reply OHCCNP2003,

however the routers you listed are way to expensive for my budget, but thanks for the tip. Im probebly going to pick up a 2501 or 1601 to add to my lab and they are dirt cheap to buy.

cheers
