Whats a cheap router to study from?

| I'm sure this has been asked before but google and searching on this site turned up nothing, so I post.
I was hoping to find a cheap cisco router to play with. Needs to have 2 ethernet ports, I don't much care what else it has. I'd like to use it along with my home router/gateway/switch/nat/dhcp/firewall all-in-one thingy that everybody seems to have these days in my home network so it actually has some use other than just study. This will force me to actually USE it rather than just configure for lab stuff. I have a simulator by sybex, but I want the real thing.
Any recommendations for a switch while I'm at it...just for future.
Thanks a bunch | |

| so what is the point of a router in a production environment? you configure a static route, pat yourself on the back and never touch it because it is working as you intended...
router once configure is used, but you don't use it... it sit there, does its work... and especially in your environment, you won't even want to deal with it once you get it set up and pretty.
cisco.com, read product documentation, find product that meet your technical spec, 2 ether etc, check prices, like you would if your boss give you some money for new toys.
and you know... that's a lot of requirements.
1.cheap
2. playable.
3. work in production environment
4. 2 ethernet ports.
5. cheap
1. define cheap, 2000? 1000? 500? 200? < 100?
cheap one to peep at ios, those cisco dsl, they are like 50 bucks or so
then you move up, 1600, still one ether,
then 1700 we can have some fun, but then in most cases it is not in the cheap sense.
or the basic cisco study router, 2500, 2600, you can get 2 ether for 2600.
you may have more relevant response if you state your budget... so ppl don't have to waste time and can just tell you straight up that no, can't do it for that money *chuckle*

| Depending on what you want to do, go to ebay and look for one of the following 2507 2 serial ports, 1 ethernet fanned out to a built-in 16 port hub; under $200 or 2514 two ethernet AUI ports and 2 serial ports, no hub for under $300.
Switches are not cheap. While a 1912 (~$125) will get you started if you are going to continue on then you might as well look for a 2950 (~$600) since that is what the CCNP has/is changing to. A 2924XL might do for everything with updated software but I am not sure about that, it is cheaper at (~$400).
CCIE uses twin 3950's about 2K apiece.

| Yeah, under $300 cheap sounds great to me
Plenty of 2514's around too. I'm gona have to get a raise before I buy a switch, hehe...I thought they'd be cheaper.
Thanks for the input guys!
BTW, mikop, I play a lot with my home network...it's more like a big lab with real users than a production environment

Ok I was not sure if you just wanted a single access server or dual routers. Anyway good luck. Since this is your first router be careful when looking for what you will get. You want 16MB flash and 16MB ram in the 2514, a console cable kit, and two ethernet transceivers. Without a console kit you won't be able to talk to it. The transceivers convert AUI to rj45. It would be nice if they send you the doc CD or at least a CD with the current IOS image. Getting that stuff later is a pain the first time.

| 2514s are the greatest at 2e and 2s. I got one in my home lab.
Like everyone has been saying, make sure it has 16 flash and 16ram, and IOS 12.2.x
