Hi, I am a newbie to cisco routers. I purchased a used cisco 2501 router and I would like to know how to access it. Would I need a serial cable? A transciever came with it and a cat 5 cable but I dont know how what to do lol.

thank you for your time

you need a console cable. (roll-over i think it is)

you need a RJ45 - DB9 Adapter. (from rj45 end to a serial end to plug in your pc)

tranciever, you put in e0 and then a cable from that to a siwtch.

put the RJ45-DB9 adapter on your serial port in the back of ur pc. plug the rollover cable from the adapter to the console port on the router. Open hyperterminal. connection = serial

Here is the stuff you will need
Rollover Kit
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&category=28037

Transceiver
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...9&category=3704

Those were the cheapest items of those types at the time but you might wanna do a search again on ebay to make sure you are getting the best deal.
