I'm putting together a two-node network to do hands-on practice for my MCSA. Anyway, I've made my own crossover cable, and tested them with a Fluke NetTool. I then ensured that both machines are part of a WORKGROUP, and then assigned then IP addresses. One got 10.0.0.1, the other 10.0.0.2, with SM of 255.255.255.0. One would thing that this is sufficient, right? Although I was successful in pinging the stack, I was unable to ping the other machine. The "Request timed out" messages were frustrating. However, there were a few times during my pings when I'd have one packet make it, which was encouraging. All that I know on tech and network support, everything checked out. What gives?

Here's the gotcha: both NICs were set to 100Mbps, Full-duplex. Durr!!!

I discovered this while looking at the driver/advanced tab. Once I had reset both drivers to be 10Mbps, half-duplex, everything worked like a charm. Hope this little pearl of wisdom will benefit others who've never come across this yet.
