| hey,
when i type the command -
show interface ethernet 0
i can see the encapsultaion of ethernet inteface is 802.3
in the cisco book its written that 802.3 encapsulation cannot identify the upper layer protocol, and must be used with proprietary Lan, for example IPX.
the default encapsulation of the ethernet interaface is 802.3.
i don't understand how this encapsulation can work with ip addresses. there isn't place in the frame to configure the upper protocol (llc)- in this case ip
please help | |

| Hmmm, well 802.3 does have the TYPE field to identified the protocol that it is encapsulating. The network layer packet that contains the network layer addresses(ip, ipx etc...) is encapsulated into the data field on the ethernet frame.
Hmmm doubt what I said makes any sense. | |

| first of all thanks
its now make sense -
why in cisco book and other info i saw in the web its written
that 802.3 frame has only length field and not type field.
are u sure 802.3 can be encapsulated with proto type ?
why its not written ?
though its make a lot of sense
