feeling depressed :(

| I'm currently enrolled in a CCNA class and a degree program at the technical college that I go to...After reading this thread, it has got me really depressed, and I'm wondering if it's even worth it anymore...Don't get me wrong, I love working with computers, but with all of the negative talk about the over saturated market(I know it's true), and how it may not even get better because there are too many people doing it and everything, I often ask myself, what is the point of even going on with IT??? I often think that I should just go to medical school and forget about this crap!!!! It's just not right when one busts their butt getting a degree and taking lots of other course all for nothing............At least in the medical field, jobs are plentiful....
Thoughts anyone?.......... Dusty

| Well, with that attitude you probably should drop IT, since you don;t really show a passion for it. And yes, how corny this might sound, you have to have a passion for IT if you still stick with it in times like today, but guess what, it doesn't help complaining about it, because no one listens, and the ones that do don't really care.
If you really feel like dissing IT just because you don't think you are going to get a job or whatever, go do it somewhere else, because like I said, (and again, this is probably a great contender for this years "The most Corny Statement" award,) the people that come here are passionate about what they do, and we really don't need other people telling us how worthless and time-wasting it seems.
just my 2 cents

| The point is, I really enjoy the computer tech field, but it's just so darn depressing to read about how the tech sector is doomed......I remember back in 1994 when everyone was telling me that "tech is the way to go" I realize that money isn't everything, but we do have to feed our families...On a bright note, I hear that there are more Entrepreneurs being made than ever before...So maybe starting your own business if the way to go these days....Heck, I know people making a living selling on ebay, so I guess there are great self employment opportunties out there. We just have to look hard for them I guess...

Bass, I can understand your point and I am passionate about IT, but answer me this, if it's not going to pay the bills or feed your family, what is the point??

| Well do what everyone else is doing and keep working at your non IT job until you manage to break in. I mean with the way things are right now you would have a hard time finding work in any field not just IT. Instead of being down about how crappy things are think of it as a chance to learn as much as you can. Get that degree and earn those certifications that way when things pick up you will be in the right position. I read a artical a few weeks ago(forgot where) and it was saying how the IT field is due for growth explosion because companies will soon need to begin upgrading again. Ehnnn whether or not that is true I dont know but it sounds good to me and it keeps me motivated to learn as much as I can so I can get some of the action when the time comes. | |

| I understand your pont, and I agree we need to have money, but we all try our best to make end meet, but you don;t hear us complaining about it, do you... | |

| Chris,
thanx for the tips..I guess I just have alot of bitterness too after being laid off by WorldCom. Man, I have so much hate for that company after that...Nowthing but Hate, Hate, Hate, when I think of WorldCom.......
Bass,
don't think of it so much as complaining as venting....I'm venting right now...There is nothing wrong with venting ...I think it's more anger than anything else........

| Mystic,
Depending on how old you are, you should consider going into medicine or law. Of course, if you are in your 40s, like me. . it would be difficult to change now.
I think the IT field will suck for at least 2-3 more years. . lawyers always make money cause they are always thieving from people.

| When the whistle bolws, the good players are not on the bench -- they're on the field playing. The same holds true in IT. A good tech is rarely on the sidelines... | |

| Look up kid. There are two things you should consider about your depression.
First there are some who are in IT and have been for a long time who want others to think that there are NO jobs in IT and that the market is over-saturated and that you will never get a chance because you do not have ten years hands-on experience and that none of the certifications are even valuable anymore etc.
You have to see some of this for what it really is and that is all I have to say about that. If you let someone else on the inside looking out discourage you then you need to do some soul searching about personal initiative and drive. Never let anyone “talk” you out of something that you want to do. You are more in control of your career than you think.
Second, you have to realize that no matter what career path you eventually follow, it will only be enhanced by a firm knowledge of information systems. Some with IT skills go into manufacturing, medical support, the military/law enforcement, logistics etc. You have to think outside of the traditional “box” if it becomes constraining.
You should follow a career and study path that you have a passion for and that you believe will be most rewarding to you. Otherwise life becomes a grind.
Good luck. | |

| Everything goes in cycles, and you have to be ready when it comes. It's good to either keep up to date or learn something really old that nobody knows about. Good luck on the latter. Or get DOD clearance which has a HUGE boom right now with Bush&CO.
Right now, people don't want to spend money for various reasons on IT. Software licensing has just become a nightmare and doubled alot of organizations IT costs. It's becoming harder and harder to predict the next fiscal year's cost. With a bad economy, everybody's belt is tight. Experience is great, but certification will get your foot in the door. Fact is everyone's getting certified to justify their existance in IT budgeting. If you want your name on that calling list, your qualifications needs to stand out.
If you get bummed, someone once told something very true...
People don't hire when YOU need a job. They only hire when THEY need you.
You just need to make sure that you are the best when they come asking.
Keep studying and looking. Since everybody's getting certified, ever wonder about training others. There's a need for trainers now. Go figure...

| The other thing that is big in IT right now is soft skills and project management. It goes back to justifying budgets. | |
