I can aquire both of these or one of these, and would like to know which would be best to set up at my home to practice for my CCNA and still be able to integrate it into my network (Network: A novell server, and a windows 2000 netware workstation) I ask which one, because once I finish with my CCNA, I would like to have hands on experience with the most marketable router. Remember I am new to CCNA so I need you folks expertise

I meant 3000 series not 300

Really all you need is a 2500. I am not sure what the differences are, but the sims are for the 2500 router. Personally I would save the money and get 2 2500's with ios 12 for under 500 on ebay. Or get 1 250 and a 1900 switch for under 500

David is spot on. Buy two 2500's and a switch. This is everything you need for CCNA and beyond.

If you need to do truncking etc. then go for a 2620 or 2621 after you finished the CCNA (trunking needs 100Mb and the 2620 series provides this) but that isn't really needed at the moment as the setup mentioned should be ideal.

Using two 2503's I have set up both serial ports with DCE-DTE cables (For access lists) and an AUI transceiver on each AUI ports.

I found using the routers in my job didn't give me enough experience and I couldn't progress as I didn't have enough knowledge.

I'm still new to this so I hope we can exchange information etc.

With regard to the 4000 series -- not only will it not help you prepare for the CCNA exam, it will hinder your studying. The 4000 series switches are CLI based (meaning the commands to set configuration options all begin with SET). The CCNA tests your knowledge on IOS based switches and routers. To accomplish the same thing on a 1900 series and a 4000 series switch takes completely different commands. However, when you are looking at CCNP, maybe you would want to consider a 4000 series switch. They are specifically tested there.

In reply, I am assuming you mean 3000 and 4000 series ROUTERS. If that is correct, then I see no problem in using either except that the 4000 series are now end of line, so I don't how much support information is still available.

If however you mean SWITCHES, the edmonds_robert is correct in suggesting the 3000 series switches.

I have worked on both 5513 switches - CLI based, and 6513 IOS based switches. I know which I prefer.
