Question about clocking

| Hey everybody,
I am wondering something about setting the clock rate on a serial interface, for both the CCNA exam and for real life. I understand that to connect a router to another router serially, you must provide clocking on the DCE interface of one of the routers. Let's just call it Router_C.
If Router_C has a DCE connection from it's s1 to Router_B's s0 (DTE), then you must provide clocking on Router_C's s1, correct?
I have heard that one topic possibly covered on the exam could include this area. My next question is,
Is there a default clock rate? Should I just assume 64000 on the exam and in real life.
I have heard that the exam might infer that a clock rate should be set without actually telling you what the rate should be. Nevertheless, I have not yet read anywhere that there is a defult that shoud be observed from router to router.
Cheers,
Adam

Ans: yes.
In real situation, it is not practical to use a router as a DCE. This is used only on Labs.
I dont think there is a default clock rate, because when you use the clock rate command, you have to sepcify a value or else the command is incomplete.

I heard the same think there is a default clockrate 20000. I'm not sure but that's what they told me.

"Default
No clock rate is configured"
This is correct. In a lab setup, DCE is used to set clock rate. The rate set in most lab situations is 56000. This allows the two routers to communicate as though there is a WAN connection. Through out the networking academy (4 semesters), all labs requiring testing of an established connection i.e., PING, TELNET, etc. the DCE clock rate was always set to 56000.
Hope this helps to better understand the subject of clock rate and DCE/DTE relationship.
