I have just brought a catalyst 2900 switch and was wondering how to reset the configuration so I can start over.

A simple question to those who have experience but I have only just started so please forgive me, any advice whould be appreciated.

I think all you need to do is type in:
switch#Setup
or
switch#write erase

you should be able to use the help commands to figure them out

Thanks for the advice, can anyone else offer any advice?

From priviledged mode: 'erase startup-config'

How are you? Thanks for the reply?

Will that reset the switch and enable me to configure the switch as if I just unpacked it from new and power it up for the first time?

Jeff's right. Erase start and reload. When the switch comes back up, the config will be cleared and you can configure to your heart's desire.

Hey, Lex!

Going pretty good, I've been working on CCNA for almost a month now and don't expect it to take that much more! How's things?

If it's new and no config is in NVRAM it should prompt to go to Setup.

So as jeff stated, from priviledged mode:

'erase startup-config'

To reset the router? Reason being I want to know how to reset the switch as I am bound to make so many mistakes but that's the all part of the learning curve.

Great to hear jeff, I've just started to learn some cisco basics and when I set the switch up it asked for config information and now I want to start from scratch again.

What are you using to study for the CCNA if you don't mind me asking.

OK, so having typed erase startup-config how do I get the switch to prompt you for the configuration information as it did when I first used the console cable to configure the switch?

Try 'setup' at the prompt, or if you want to do any other config after that 'configure' gives you all the options but no prompts.

The best thing to do first is learn the help system. '?' lists available commands, this is context sensitive so it changes depending on your level. word? lists commands beginning with word. word ? lists parameters for word. That should be enough to get you going on help.

I have been using Cisco Press 607 Exam Prep Guide by Wendell Odom. 1000 pages long! Also you need routers or simulators for a lot of practical hands on. Even with one real router, you may be best served getting a simulator. Boson's simulator comes highly recommended at $149. Todd Lemmle Exam prep from Sybex includes a Prep Guide and simulator for around $200. I'm cheap, so I got the Cisco book at $60, found Sybex Virtual Lab eTrainer simulator on Amazon.com from one of their partners for $29 (this is Lemmle's previous version, before the $200 set for 607.) I have also spent another $29 on Lemmle's latest Practice Exam for 607. He hangs aroung Cramsession.com, good place to inquire further. Good luck on Microsoft and Cisco, etc.!

Thanks for all the advice Jeff, are you close to taking the CCNA yet?

well what is the exact model of the switch?

if its a setbase, use clear config

also, I recommend that you setup a tftp server asap and back up image/config file b4 you really get down and dirty with messing with it.

Catalyst 2924XL-EN running version 12.5 of the software. I've run setup in privileged mode and it has run the configuration, is this correct?

yes, do whatever they say then,

there are 2 basic flavor, one is the ios we are all familiar of and the other is the setbase command use with cat 5000 etc that are on the ccie lab.

anyway, just wanted to clarify. you are fine now, now get tftp server up and running and you can mess around with no fear.

i use pumpkin at http://www.klever.net/kin/pumpkin.html

you can download a tftp server at 3com (i think most ppl use this)
you can find them at 3com.com and search for tftp server, get the one with syslog.

edit: site you want to explore
