Well for me it was the second. My fist attempt resulted in a 847; two points below the passing score. Today, I scored an 898! Whew!

Points to consider:
1. Know the OSI - I mean everything: what happens at each layer and how it is referenced to the DOD's.

2. Know subnetting - how many hosts/networks, the network and broadcast addresses, and what network the particular address falls into ie: what is the network address for 192.168.3.17 255.255.255.240

3. Know VLANs and how to configure them

4. Know ISDN, PPP and Frame relay

5. Know ALL the "show" commands!!!!

6. Know how to configure routing protocols(RIP/IGRP), the different ports (Console/VTY/AUX), and how to set the passwords.

7. Know access lists

8. Know the differences between the following:
a)full-duplex/half-duplex
b)bridges/switches
c)cut-through/fragment-free/store and forward
d)routing/routed protocols

Cisco Study Guide

To pass I use Sybex CCNA 2.0 640-507, Todd Lammle's RouterSim, and Keystone Learning systems 640-507

Thats right all! I used all material directed for the 507, but I still passed. I owe BIG thanks to Todd and Keystone.

I am off to finish my MCSE and then I'll be back for the CCNP

See ya

congrats man! i passed yesterday too, it's like were twin brothers hehe cause i failed the first one with a 847 too. sybex is a great start, and your advice is right on, however i read the sybex book twice in detail and did the simulator and i still wasn't in full understanding because todd's sybex is excellent at getting to the point and teaching you in a fashion you'll understand (laymans terms), however my take was that todd was too breif on some areas and a supplement is needed. after failing i bought the cisco press 607 book and read the quizes and the answers, and the foundation summaries (charts and timers). i feel i got a lot of good stuff from cisco, and if you're on a budget you can go to barnes and nobles and just read it on their couch, took me a couple of hours to run through it. im glad i bought the sybex book though, because looking at cisco press, its daunting because cisco doesn't ease you in, they bombard you with details which can be confusing when you dont have the basics. in addition todds subnetting method is far easier to understand than ciscos, look how many pages cisco takes to explain it, their method is longer too. just me 2 cents

I failed the CCNA with a 846, then about 2 weeks later I passed it with a 949, boy I was sure was happy. Now its been about 2 weeks since I passed and I got a phone call from the Polymetric Representative stating that Cisco had found some errors and that I really had Passed the first time. So now their going to refund my money I spent on the second test.

WAY to GO Prometric!

At lease they can fess up to their mistake and give you a refund. And hey, at lease you really know your stuff, not that that is any comfort to the grief, I know I went through, by not passing the first round.

Lets just hope they don't find another mistake and say you did not pass the second time and your cert is now invalid, or something crazy like that. Probably not though.

I believe that most people know their stuff before the exam.

However, anxious get to everyone.
