Author Is the CCNA certification really Important ??

guys..I have finished the CISCO Networking Academy Program (CCNA) ..also I took the CCNA prometric test (which I failed the first time by a few marks)!!

Due to my university studies, i was not able to study for the CCNA for a couple of months !! And now, I don't feel like studyin again. (my uni's over now)

My question is: If I have the CCNA diploma, IS it really THAT important to clear the CCNA exam ? coz, I can go for CCNP straight away now. Plus I think that just having
50-60 questions right doesn't make anyone a CCNA !! I went through the 6 month course and I think I am prepared for the next step !!

Please correct me if I am wrong guys...As it is the IT market is F$#$!@ up these days..I don't wanna waste my time studying for the same thing again. I'd rather grab some new skills ??

Any comments/suggestions guys ??

dusktilldawn07,

Dude I believe you are missing the point. Just because you have the CCNA Diploma does not mean your certified from Cisco's standpoint. You still do not have the CCNA certification. If you read the Cisco Training Prerequsites for CCNP it states that a valid CCNA certification is required. You are gonna have to take the CCNA test again and pass if you want to get your CCNP certification to count.

you are required to pass the exam to become CCNA certified. this is different from getting the diploma from the Academy.

Think of it like this just because I pass Law school does not make me a lawyer until I pass the BAR exam.

you will need to complete the CCNA before you can become a CCNP as well..

iN ORDER TO TAKE THE CCNP YOU MUST GET CCNA

dusktilldawn07, depends on what your goals are. If you want to continue in IT and pursue CCNP, then go for the CCNA. If you dont want to pursue IT and want to enter another field, then forget it, its not worth it, unless you just want to surpass the challange of passing the CCNA cert exam. Personally, I already have a good non-IT job, and while I will retake and hopefully pass the CCNA exam for the challange of it, Im in no rush to get into the IT job quagmire, if ever. Ive changed my priorities since the IT job market has collapsed ----- Terry

lets not be shortsighted about the job market either. and i know all too well how sheety this market is. was making 95k/yr got layed off, settled for a job paying 55k/yr, got layed off, started to look again and can't get more than a 2 year contract for 60k. if you go for the CCNP, by the time you get it the market will return, and then us employees will have our revenge. im going for ccie, all about job security to me.. .certifications not only mean high pay, but more importantly they mean security.

Your thoughts maybe a bit clouded, I have talked to several people who know a few CCIE's making around $60 -75K and if you look at the number of people attempting the lab now compared to 3 years ago it is almost 5X. The market and industry will slowly return to a stable level but never to the 1999 levels or at least not in the next 10 years. As many of us are sitting here laid off we are trying to advance our certifications and education. Me I just enrolled in college to try and complete my Masters. A friend of mine that also got laid off is enrolling in college to finish his BS.

I guess in short if the market continues to be flooded with people looking for IT jobs and most of them are highly skilled then when the jobs do start coming back it will not be any different then it is now.

i hate it when people downplay ccie and say that it's not worth it anymore. darth, wirechild, part of what you say is true, in that you're never at the end of the journey, and you'll never start learning, but let's not forget that it is the most prestigious cert in the world! and despite the bad economy it still pays hansomely IF you have some experience too, of course you're not going to start in IT at 100,000 with just a paper and no experience. perhaps im venting from what ive been hearing on the CCNP forum, a lot of pescimists up there shooting people down saying CCIEs make 60,000 as if they were like trying to convince people not to do it. i can beleive that someone with a CCIE, no experience, and an immigrant would make 60K to start, but don't beleive that of people with my experience. go to monster, do a search for CCIE, you'll see 100k jobs listed, and ive seen some of those jobs up there for months - meaning they can't find someone qualified enough, i know id be a good match for a couple if i had CCIE. as far as people attempting the lab, yes it's gone up and will always because more and more companies are now requiring the certification, and more and more of the world will continue to get networked. the number of people has gone up but the number of people passing is still at like 30%. and their are still ONLY 5,000 or so CCIES, do your math and compare that to MCSEs, and just because people are taking the CCIE doesnt mean they're going to pass. i think you're thoughts are clouded by pescimism, i got layed off twice, but i aint giving up, and desite what you think, THE MARKET WILL RETURN!!! always has, in every recession there are always naysayers who say it will never be the same, the tech market is not saturated, just on hold, companies have money to spend on tech, they just are waiting for signs of the recovery, and as soon as that happens watch out.

I truly hope your correct, but yes I am very pescimistict right now as I have no job and I haven't had any luck finding one.
I have passed my CCIE written(91) and had my lab scheduled for mid Nov. I will probably cancel it due to not having the funds(3000+) to go and take it. On the other hand how many people can sit around and wait for the "market" to come back.

The total number of CCIE's is around 7500 and this is not comparable to MCSE's. Every company that has a CCIE probably has 7 - 10 MCSE's and there is a ton company's that have 10 MCSE's and don't need a CCIE.

Don't get me wrong I would be happy to be making 60K even if I did have my CCIE and job security would be a little better with it.

i hear ya wirechild, and maybe it won't ever be like it was, you could be right. im fortunate in that i will be receiving unemployment for the next 6 months, and in a state that doesnt require any proof that you're looking and it's $362/wk, well enough to pay my car payment and other bills, especially being im moving back in with my parents. also im getting a loan for ccie instructor lead traing. going to 3 seperate bootcamps over the next 6 months and will be reading cisco every day for 9-10 hours. im lucky im not married or tied down, so i can do this. im a bit concerned myself, i sure as hell hope that ill get a high paying job, because with the student loans i have and now another 15,000 in loans ill be hard strapped to pay em off. ill be happy with 80k, that would be plenty to pay the bills, and i can relocate wherever. and you know you got another good point about job security. i know what that's all about, had a job that paid 75k + car allowance + 20k annual bonus + stock options, and after relocation the economy started to tumble i got the slip along with about 300 others in the company. then it happened again with the next company i joined. maybe i should have become a doctor or lawyer. heck in a recession people still need doctors, and even more people need attorneys. take enron for example. anyhow... just my 2 cents

I see the CCNA as a great cert. It is the entry-level one for Cisco, so it is not the end of the journey -- good idea to follow it up with a CCNP -- but it sure looks good on that resume!
