Author multiple VLANs per port?

Can you assign multiple VLANs for just one port?

If so, how?

Thanks ahead for your responses!!!

Good question.

yes you can,

You enable trunking, which allows it to carry frames from multiple Vlans,
these are used to connect to other switches or routers.

An 'access link' port is a port configured for just one VLAN.

two ways. trunks carry multiple vlans, but aren't normally configured for end pc's(although there are nic's that can do trunking).

there is also a setting valid only on the 2900(2950)/3500(3550) which allows a port to have multiple vlans. From what i understand though, once you configure a multi vlan port you CANT configure a trunk on the same switch.

the command is "(config-if)#switchport multi vlan"

What good would a VLAN be without being able to trunk?

what if any is the difference between a multi vlan port and a 'trunked' port?

a trunk would tag the frames with vlan information. a multi vlan port would just forward traffic for each vlan, leaving the endstation with no layer 2 way of knowing which vlan was which.

hmm i wish i had some spare switches to try this command out on. It's got me intrigued now. Especially the "won't work with trunks configured".

Also, you could only trunk a FAST ETHERNET port (aka 100mpbs).

This may be outdated knowledge. The latest information I'm hearing is that one of the newer IOS's(12.1 or 12.2) will allow dot1q on 10mbit links. Haven't had a chance to test it myself yet, but if true then there's a lot of books that are now wrong
