| if an ip address/subnet mask is incorrect on a serial interface on one router,
what would a 'show interface s0' be on a second router connected to the above mentioned router?
i think serial is up,line is up?
as the line is datalink and independant of the network address?
cheers

| I agree with John, that it would show
up and up. There is not a problem with the physical line and also no problem with the protocol. But there is a major layer 3 problem. Sooooo ping would definitely fail.
Test is a check it out.

| ok so if I shut down one interface
would the interface connected to it go from
serial x up line protocol is up
to
serial x is up line protocol is down
or
serial x is down line protocol is down.
I guess my question could be put like this:
two interfaces, if you shut one down would the shut down interface still send a cd (carrier detect) to the other interface, even though its not sending 'keepalives'.
Cheers

| It's not really possible to have an down/up interface, since there's no way for keep alives to arrive on a line if there is no carrier on the line. One router does not send CD to the other. That's just a function of the line.
