Author Advice needed about Cisco Academy

I am going to try to test out of the first semester of the Cisco academy (I have had a general networking class and have the Network+) and I plan to study several weeks. Has anyone else done this and passed? Does the test follow the books closely? In addition, due to work conflicts, I plan on only taking the second semester of Cisco and studying for semester three and four on my own. I will concentrate closly on the labwork during my 8 week class and if possible read ahead. If anyone has any advice or comments I would appreciate it.

ok man, here's the deal, if you know OSI like the back of your hand and can do all binary, dec, hex conversions and can do any type of basic subnetting, then you have semester 1 down,,,
basically, it's just learning each layer of the OSI model, and learning how to subnet, it's good to have a teacher that can help people that don't catch on to subnetting as easy as other's,

Semester 2 is a good one to take because it's all learning the basic configurations of routers and learning all about that, our semester 2 FINAL, (the teacher gave us 5 router's, 2 2500's and 3 2600's, a switch and cable's etc.... from the ground up we had to have all router's configured, connected and be able to ping from router a through e, all from scratch in like 45 minutes, by ourselves, then he went in and changed something, then I had to go back in and figure out what he changed to fix it, we also had a subnetting question to give us the ip's for the routers and such,,,

semester 3 and 4 are all vlan's and extra stuff like that, i haven't had those last 2 classes yet,, anyone else?

I only took the sem 1 & 2 for me if you know the basic of networking sem 1 is a waste, sem 2 it helps me alot especially on hands on.I didn't take the sem 3&4 It's all about wan, vlan and in my opinion they don't even have a ISDN or frame relay simulator so i just bought the sem3&4 book and read it.I passed with 935

Thanks for you propmpt reply so I can concentrate in depth on those areas (especially subnetting). I am hoping semester 2 will at least give me enough exposure to routers that with alot more reading, I can pass the certification test.

i agree, if you know semester 1 and take semester 2, just get the semester 3&4 book, read it and you should have no problem...
and good luck,,, my college doesn't offer the 3rd class this summer so i will be getting the 3&4 book and reading it and take a stab at the ccna exam before i start semester 3 just to see where i stand, and maybe get lucky

once you have your ccna you can skip up to and start semester 5 , on the CCNP track

Yo,

I tried that very same thing over Spring Break. Having completed Semesters 1 & 2, I read the Cisco Networking Academy Program Second-Year Companion Guide three times and took my certification exam. I bombed. My downfall, I believe was that I spaced-out on the router simulation portion of the exam and I completely forgot to use a particular command upon completion of configuring the routers. Silly me. I guess they weren't really complete, were they? So much for what the eLabs/vLabs tried to teach me. I'm dense that way sometimes. All of the Cisco Networking Academy Program eLabs/vLabs stress heavily the copy running-config startup-config command.

Being dejected as I was, I went back and finished Semesters 3 & 4 pronto to get my voucher and I got my instructor to download the Cisco Router eSIM for me. It was free and very worthwhile. The Router eSIM helped a great deal and I passed the silly exam with three more weeks of studying.

Though passing the certification exam can be done using the study manner that you have described, it just didn't happen that way for me. Don't take anything lightly. Know everything. A lot of material from Semesters 3 & 4 are covered on the test (ie., Switching, VLANs, ISDN, Frame Relay, ACLs, Novell IPX, PPP, WANs, and more).
