| Hi, Great job. I want 2 prepare for CCNA as well. What materials and resources did u use 4 your prep? | |

| Congrats on your pass.
Did you study with books for the 640-507 and then just go and take the 640-607? Do you know if there is a big difference betwwen the 2 tests? | |
| defcon1111 2002-03-22, 9:45 pm |
| from what i can see there is not a big diff between the two. i used self test software the exam notes from this site, sybex book, test killer, and i am taking a college class on cisco routing as well. that is where i got all kinds of hands on for we have 4 stacks of 2610 routers with a catalyst 1900 switch on each stack for the class.
suggestions are don't freak if you hose a simulation for i had more than one and hosed one pretty bad.(brain freeze). I had little questions on IPX encapsulations, but that doesn't mean to not know them. I reviewed them right before and wrote them down when i got in there. Know subnetting, WAN x.25 and frame relay, and know password encryption (other than enabling the secret password).
Know the OSI and where everthing sits at what levels, the DoD and the Cisco models as well.
know the 586b cabling standards such as straight/crossover/and rollover. where to use them and what the color orders are as well.
If you are struggling with the basics of the osi model you can go to www.angelfire.com/co4/defcon1111 and click the link there for it. that is a BASIC layout of it. I use it for teaching the beginner networking students at the college I attend when they are short on instructors.
If you have any other questions let me know.

| Passed it (CCNA- 607) yesterday with 930 (out of 1000). This site is a great help - a lots of valuable information, study tips.
Here is my two cents: 1) subnet mask (must), 2)different segementation, 3)cable types for what, 4) practice on lab!!!
I got total of 50 questions, 2 Simulation tests (one easy, one intermediate). Overall it's a good test - only a few questions are very tricky. Another tip is - you may want to check the testing center you're going - because the new sim. test need more powerful server to support - that's why a lot of testing centers got "crash incident"!
Make sure theirs are good - does not have this problem! (Unless you want to test twice)
I also got a question for those passed the test - should we sign any "Agreement"? When? Because in the score report it mentions that you need to sign the "Certification Agreement". But I cannot recall that whether did I sign it during taking the test or not...?
Next goal - CCNP.
Thanks.

| My 2.3 cents. After my experience job hunting and knowing that even w/ this cert most places aren't going to let me near a router for a right good while,(6 months at least) I'm beginning to wonder if this is worth it. I don't have lots of experinece to begin with and now I'm feeling like I bought the great marketing lie, "Get a new career in fast growing field" or some such nonsense as that. I took CCNA class, used Boson tests, whatever free test stuff I could find and thought I was ready to take the test. Day I was scheduled, Cisco had changed the test the day before. Center couldn't give new test. They didn't have sufficient hardware, software, tupperware, someware? to give new test.
I've tossed my books in the closet and haven't touch them for a month, except to move them to get something else. I am reevaluating whether or not I should continue pursuing anymotre certs at this point. Have A+ w/limited experience and that's not cutting much ice anywhere. I realized this stuff isn't that hard once I got into it. Acomputer is essentially an idiot. It only understands 2 things on/off. Learning how to speak idiot like learnig any new language has a learning curve. I'm not fluent yet, though I can carry on a good conversation.
I wonder if anyone really wants new people in the field? I think we need to take all the marketing guys and set them adrift in the Pacific.
eesh -want a rant. anything of substance here or am I just being a dick?

| It sounds like you are stuck in the same old loop of how do i get a job without experience and how do i get experience without a job. The certifications are always a good thing to have even if you don't have the experience that you/others want. People will look at the certifications and know that you are capable of learning anything they want to teach you. There is a severe need for people in the IT industry, and they will put down that they want all the exp in the world, but they will also interview you with no experience because they need someone that can do the job. To get extra experience even though it may not be with a router per say, but pc experience, volunteer at local schools, junior achievements, the boys and girls clubs, YMCA whatever you have close and convenient to you. They always need help and it will help you get hands on, plus future employers love to see community involvement on a resume. the pluses are 2 fold. Keep going with the studying and certifications every little bit helps, and don't expect one or two certs to carry you through keep going and show them you are continuing on.
Good Luck
