Author Ethernet frame types with IP

How do you choose which ethernet frame to use on a network using ip ?Or do you even choose?,does it auto configure? or is there only one frame type for IP? Lammle explained the different type of frames in the first chapter but left it at that. Or maybe im a little dense and missed that part of the explanation altogether.

I know IPX supports different kinds of Ethernet frames hence the encap command, im assuming that IP can only use Ethernet II frames? or can you use encap with ip. I dunno

Do a search on cisco for ethernet cheat sheet. it says on there that IP runs on Ehternet II and 802.2 snap. but take a look at that page it has some great descriptions on most the 802 formatting.
