| In the determination of the Root Bridge does wire speed get added into that or is it just the 32768 and the MAC. I know in the determination of the root ports wire speed is there. Just not sure if i missed something in the reading. | |

| I was waiting to see if anyone answered this question for you, and no one did. So, here is your answer.

Wire speed IS NOT a determining factor of the root bridge.
Root Bridge Selection:
The Bridge ID determines who is the root bridge.
Bridge ID [Bridge Priority + MAC]; the bridge with the LOWEST BRIDGE IDENTIFIER is selected as the root bridge. The bridge id equals the 2-BYTE SWITCH PRIORITY plus the 6-BYTE MAC ADDRESS. By default the bridge priority is 32,768. The SET SPANTREE ROOT command changes the bridge priority to 8,192.

| Hooligan, Clearwater is alright. but than again I enjoy a few months when it is cold and snows. But if you like warm weather, water, bugs, and traffic its the place for you. hehe. but everywhere seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. it is a nice area its just that im ready to move on. I hear there are lots of jobs in the area but ive yet to get a call. guess there looking for people with a little more experience than I have. thanks to everyone for the posts. since thats all that goes into the determination what stops a 10mb connection from becoming the root bridge if all others are 100Mbs or does it not matter what the speed of the root bridge is. | |

| You are supposed to set the root bridge manually. It is supposed to be near the center of your network, and if I remember correctly, the default STP timers are optimized for a network diameter of 7. | |

| hmm Ill have to go back and do some reading in the lammle book. I dont remember reading that you have to set it up manually. than again most the chapters have labs on setting stuff up and I dont remember there being a lab for that chapter. | |

| Strike didn't say you HAVE to set pick your root bridge. STP will pick its own if you don't but you have a bad design if you don't manually pick what you want.

| Dang nothing like everyone jumping on the boat to make someone look bad on an interpretation of what they read. | |

HA! Don't sweat it, I've done the same thing before. After all, techies are known for being exact and precise to the point of being anal.

Don't take it personal! Remember this is a forum where many read the posts so accuracy and clarity count. Heck, as stated in another post, my early morning, quick posts often require expansion
Ouch just saw the time stamp on my post...it's really 0435 EST....guess I should fix that!
