Where the heck can I get a serial to rj 45 converter. I tried 4 computer stores , nobody has one. Also, ifr I wanted to use my 1601 on my network, could I ? Can i use the serial port on a lan with a converter ? Am I making any sense here ?

Me and you are in about the same boat with trying to get a CCNA lab set up.
You should be able to use it to segment your LAN from the Internet if you have cable/dsl
I am not sure about using the serial port on the LAN I would like to find out if that is possible too

For the RJ-45 to Serial you can try on e-bay to get a Cisco Cable Package or just look for a console cable you can get them for around $4-5.
You can also find the AUI converter there also for about $10.
Try getting them from the same person to save on shipping

The 1601 Router comes with an 10-Base T RJ 45 port and a AUI port and a serial port

here is the Cisco link for it

realistically -- unless you have a serial line (like a 56k Frame Relay connection) to your -- lab you will only be able to use it to Telnet to via the LAN interface and console to it via the Console interface. i wanted to do the same thing as you with a 1602 when i started studying CCNA.

you need a 1605 to use 2 ethernet interfaces.

although you won't be able to practice any real routing, you will be able to familiarize yourself with the proper syntax of the commands needed for the test. and other than commands, the CCNA is more theory than actual hands-on.

if you can find a serial cross-over (or whatever they are called) and another router you could route between the to routers.

for any pieces of equipment you might try to find a local cisco reseller.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. It would be good at this point if I could just access it and get familiar with how a real cisco router will respond to commands. I think I'll end up at KG2 for the 2501 kit. Any thoughts on the kit they sell.

looks like a good deal. should be able to do plenty with that. do you have a switch? the switch they have is a little pricey but honestly, i don't think you really need to have all that physical hardware to pass the test but it will come in very handy.

You can try getting a different bundle on E-Bay
I have seen a 3 router bundle go for around $700 to $600 at times
Here is the correct link
http://www.kg2.com/2501studykit1.html
If you go on E-bay you can get most of the stuff for cheaper the only problem is getting the 12.2 IOS for the router.
You can get a 2501 that has the correct IOS then get a lower one and upgrade the low end one.
Also, every now and then I have seen the IOS CD sell on E-bay
Here are some prices I have noticed
2501 12.2 IOS $350
2501 11.1 IOS $250
DB-60 Crossover $6
Console Cables $10
AUI $11
2828 EN Switch $200
1924 Switch $200
1912 Switch $200

Here are some auction numbers to check out, they are for cisco labs. Some are good and some are so-so. I just scanned real quick to see what I could find

Item # 2009228922
Item # 2009850974
Item # 2008873221
Item # 2009459416
Item # 2010275452
Item # 2009749705
Item # 2009766591
Item # 2010078660

Also you do not have to go with the 2501 series routers you could go with other 2500 routers. Here is Cisco's link to compare them

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td.../2500ug/ovr.htm

Here is a 2500 Software bundle for the 12.0.6 IOS release
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...item=2010264718
It looks like he has about 5 for sale in his store in the other category
