Hi,

passed the CCNA exam today and would like to say some words to the CCNA candidates. If you wonder if (or how) you're prepared well read the following.

First: This is a REAL exam. Don't trust the people saying "I prepared a week, and the exam was a piece of cake". We all know these guys from school and university, don't we?

Actually, if you are in network business for some years, you somehow know 60-70% of the CCNA stuff. The problem is the rest which you cannot solve by calculating, logical conclusions, experience or something, you just have to KNOW it!

Here is my (almost certain) way to the cert:

- Buy the Tod Lammle CCNA Study Guide. I am sure there are many other good books around but I only know this one. Don't use the CDROM material, at least not the book in PDF format, it is too erraneous. Go to the Sybex Website, look for the errata and correct the (written) book accordingly (there are some more errors but you will find them yourself).
- Read the introduction, do the assessment test, read the chapters 1-10 and Appendix B and do the chapter tests after each chapter. Try to understand everything. Do the first practice exam. Around 80% is ok.

- Read the book once more. You'll see that some things are clear which aren't before. This time try especially to remember things which you can't calculate or logically work out ("Which commands show the dlci number of s0.0?" with 5 choices, for example). Do every chapter test and the first and second practice exam (which is on the CDROM). This time you should be better than 90%. Note the objectives where you have errors and work them out especially.

- Now you're ready to register for the exam some days ahead. On the day before the exam you should scan over the book once more, again make the tests and the practice exams (you should be near 100% now). Try to get the answers to the questions like the one mentioned above in your short time memory, but know the OSI model, subnet calculations, switching techiques and the like to 100%.

The exam is a bit different to the practice exams. You have to sign several written and online forms before and after the exam and work through two "surveys" (one from Prometric and one from Cisco) before. In the test sometimes you have to push around text boxes with your mouse and such things, really different from the practice exams.

Todd did a great job, but 2 or 3 exam questions were not covered at all by his book. And if you don't know exactly every output of every show or debug command you will not get 1000 points but probably >900. I did 967 which was fine for me. Good luck (which too helps)!
