What do you all think about this????

| Hi everyone,
I'm facing what I think is a challenge:
I might (nothing definitive for the moment) get a new position as a Net admin, and the first achievement I must attain is to become CCNA in 3 months.
Let me tell that I've never ever worked with Cisco hardware, that I don't want to be get a paper cert, and that this company will pay the books and the exam (and perhaps bring me some routers to play with???).
Do you think it's possible to become certified in such a short term?
Is there any good reference / web sites / books I can buy?
Don't tell me about braindumps, I don't want to hear about that stuff!
Thanks in advance. | |

| Hi masamune,
I did my CCNA from start to finish in about 3 months, and I didn't have any prior Cisco experience, but did have a reasonably solid theoretical base back in university.
The basic knowledge that the CCNA requires includes
1. OSI 7 Layer Model
2. LAN concepts
3. Switching/Bridging
4. Routing protocols (RIP, IGRP, a bit on OSPF, EIGRP)
5. WAN protocols (Frame-relay, ISDN)
6. Novell IPX concepts
7. IP Subnetting (VERY important)
I highly recommended Wendell Odom's "CCNA 640-607 Study Guide" by Cisco Press for the exam. Lammle's book by Sybex is easier reading, and is also quite helpful too.

| It can be done
I finished it in six weeks with NO pror eperience.

| kphua and Andronda --> Thanx a lot
I've got another question...
Yesterday I downloaded a test from Cisco's website, and I would like to know if this test is near or far from the CCNA difficulty level?

| I don't know about the Cisco test from the website, but an excellent study tool is Cisco flash card practice kit. You get a book with the flashcards, with explanations of why the right answer is right on the back of cards, and the electronic version also. And it's about $40.
Good luck! | |

| masamune I am a CISCO Instructor in Australia and I recommend the few books:
Not in any particular order
1. CISCO CCNA Exam #640-607 Flash Card Practice Kit by ciscopress.com US$39.99
2. CCNA CISCO Certified Network Associate Exam Notes Sybex US$24.99
3. CCNA Practical Studies by ciscopress.com US$49.95
4. CISCO CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide by ciscopress.com US$49.95
There are plenty of others I have used, but these seem to be the best.
Braindumps I have found with my students don't help anywhere near as much as being in a class or the texts.
Good Luck
You will need to get busy, for the full 3 months and not just sometimes when you feel like it.

| Nice advices, thanx ccoleman.
In fact I had planned to be fully dedicated to this.
Thx again everyone! | |

| I passed it 2 years ago, and it's changed, but I'm pretty sure you also have to know some basic IOS (Cisco's operating system) I didn't see this mentioned yet.
Not so much on how to configure Routing Protocols beyond RIP and implementing static routing.
You need to be able to subnet. Need to understand OSI upside down and backwards.
If you can get some hands on a router or two, and the books, and time, no problem. I taught myself by the way. It's certainly not worth paying some training place $1500. Now if your company will pay, GO FOR IT!
And Go for the job anyway. If you don't get it, (I'm sure you will) it will give you experience. Plus your employer will think to themselves that they've just invested three months into your learning curve. I'm sure if you work out and they like you they would think twice before firing you.
HTH! | |

You're right, I just looked at the exam' objectives on Cisco's web site.
Have to know a lil' IOS commands.

I hope I can get some news when I wake up (currently 03:00am in France, time to say hello to Mr Pillow). Just can't stand waiting anymore without knowing

| Since you've gotten passed 70-216 on the MCSE track you have a good foundation on networking knowledge.
You can build on that.
I took 8 weeks.
Use the resources listed above and hit it hard.
Cisco know these items cold:
OSI
tcp/ip
cisco ios "more now than when I took it"
there are several other items you need to know well also, check the objectives and test yourself against them.
