| Fast ethernet on CAT 3, 4, or 5 cabling is also known as ______.
A) 100BaseX
B) 100BaseTX
C) 100BaseT4
D) 100BaseT
They say the answer is C(100BaseT4). I thought that B, C, and D can all be correct answers. Anyone agree/disagree?

| If memory serves:
100BaseT denotes fast Ethernet.
With the three media varieties:
100BaseT4
100BaseTX
100BaseFX
The 100 denotes media speed of 100-Mbps. BASE stands for the baseband. Baseband signaling simply means that Ethernet signals are the only signals carried over the media.
T4 lets you use low quality twisted pair for the cabling.
TX and FX were originally developed for FDDI networks.
I would say D but would anyone else like to comment?
As CAT3 is 10Mbps you will need advice from others on this forum as well.

| They are right; I think they mean which of those can use either cat3,4, or 5. 100baseT4 uses 4 pair of cat3,4, or 5 cable. | |

| I'd have to agree with dumfart, despite his name
One question for George Clooney, though. TX is twisted pair. FX is fiber. Was TX orginally meant for FDDI? If so, it doesn't make sense to me. FDDI is Fiber Distributed Data Interface (or something close to that), so why TX?

| I think it was originally, but I can't be certain. I have some of the details from a course I attended more than a few years ago.
I hope this helps, it's the closest I could find:
http://www.ethermanage.com/ethernet...00quickref.html
Check it out and let me know what you think.

| the T is for Twisted pair otherwise it will be denoted as FX I do believe.
In this case its 100 baseT

Thank you chodan. | |

| I think it is C, because I can find spec on it, I could not find any spec on D.... | |

| 100baseT specifies the datalink layer (more specifically, the MAC sublayer) standard for fastethernet. 100baseTX, 100baseT4, and 100baseFX are the physical layer standards for fastethernet. 100baseTX uses two pair cat5 twisted pair, 100baseT4 uses four pair cat3,4, or 5 twisted pair, and 100baseFX specifies two strands of multimode fiber. The copper implementation of FDDI is known as CDDI. The answer to the original question is C. I'm sure there's something about it on the Cisco website. | |
