Hello,

I am a recent MCSE, and was considering the CCNA. Can anyone tell me how the CCNA works?
Is it just one exam? How many questions? What is the passing score? Is the CCNA number (640-607)?

Any help would be appreciated. Also, any suggested study book, materials, and links would also be great.

Thanks

Hi Rush2112,

I have just started on the CCNA as well. The Sybex book and the Cisco book for 607 are recommended reading.

If you can afford it, buy a 2500 series router off e-bay as the CCNA is aimed at that particular series router.

Subnetting, TCP/IP, the OSI layer are orders of the day along with OSI commands and VLAN's if I've missed anything out I'm sure someone will add to the list of items to learn.

Happy routing

I too would recommend the Sybex book for CCNA.

I would also suggest visiting the Cisco Website, it has detailed synopsis of what is required.

As for the exam, it is between 45 and 55 questions to be answered within 75 minutes (in my exam it was 50 questions).

Of the questions the majority are multiple choice.

You will be presented with two router simulations, not too hard if you have had the practice, this is where the purchase of a second hand 25XX series router will come in handy.

Scoring is a little vague. There is certainly some weighting on the questions, how this works I have not a clue

Anyway you need to achieve a mark higher than 849 out of a possible 1000. Incidentally you automatically score 300 just for turning up

you get 300 points just for taking the test.so the scoring is based on 300-1000.as far as i know you still need at least 549 worth of points just to pass.when you take the exam it will say on your score sheet that your final score is based on a scale of 300-1000 points.hope this helped .good luck

Well, one has to put in some effort to get the other 700 points... There are some tricky questions and you don't get to go back and review the previous questions, so it's important to think through each question carefully before clicking that "Next" button.

Just my 2 cents worth.
