gateway of last resort = default route
you must have ip routing enabled as well as
ip classless

ip default-gateway is a place to forward non local broadcast domain packets ... just like a normal
host

You usually set a gateway of last resort (default route) on a router, and a default gateway on a switch.

For example, a default route is done by

(config)#ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.2.52.155

where 10.2.52.155 is your gateway of last resort.

The default gateway is set on a switch by

(config)#ip default-gateway 172.16.0.10
