Hello,
I always wonder what is the following means:
(The application layer Establishes, program to program communications ( I understand that)then it (the application layer) Identifies and establishes the availability of the intended application partner and determines if sufficient RESOURCES exist for the communications (having big time trouble understanding that. What are the RESOURCES that has to be available for the communication to take place????????
Thank you in advance an example would be very much appreciated.

Yeh this is a twisting matter.
Ok Application layer , people always have difficulties with this messing up with the session layer. Including me -
Say our board We are clients using the software by vBulletin. The server and the clients are both running the software virtually well this is done maybe some other way using any programming language. Application is the first layer when the software starts concerning or coming in the network. The software starts at a point and signales our software to start with some implicit process. Then both of our softwares are brought to something both can understand by Presentation , and then the associativity with the Application layer and Session layer occurs resulting defined port numbers. Application works for softwares/programs/applications too see if we can execute threads. Here is a word from Cisco in addition :
Aplication layer : "It is the point where the user or application interfaces with thte protocols to gain access to the network. For example , a word processor is serviced by file transfer services at this layer."

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for the reply. So I can put it this way:
If I am transfering a file the application layer will check my system to see if I have a file transfer program installed, and if so then the file transfer process will start other wise I'll get an error message , is that what meant by "checking for available resources?".
