I was a subsitute CCNA instructor for a day in my friend company. He is some of the story I heard:

A guy told me that he failed the CCNA 2 times. First he got 830 something and second he got 800 something. However, he told me that the second time is harder and he know the Q, but fail. While the first exam is hard but score better. He is very confess and down.

A woman which have almost all the CCNA notes and materials she can found on the web(I think) like a 2 to 3 phone books thick. She failed yesterday.

Another mid-age man told me that he tried 3 times and everytime new Q, new score, but never made the cut. He is working with cisco router, but he told me some of the Q that he never heard of it.

Another one me that he didn't expect to pass, but he passed.

The funny thing is they all used Sybex as their primary study guide.

To all those CCNA candidate, know your material, extra materials, read more than one study guide, and good luck.

I found it experience don't matter much as long as u know and try the router as least few time.

I don't discourage for paper based cert, but most CCNA don't have cisco product experiences. (I found it from the class of 25 newbie)

Good luck to all.

Hmmm. I think maybe Cisco should use some of the simulator technology out there to create some hands on problem solving during the test. Two three good problems would suffice.....

Oh great thank you for getting me more feared now.

Those comments should make you feel at ease. I know 5 people here that have taken the test, no experience with routers, passed with flying color with only one book. Cisco Press book. They also passed the Win2K certification process for MCSE and still don't understand how to trouble shoot a real windows network. The CCNA is a basic network exam with some Cisco router jargon sprinkled in. If you just read the Cisco Press book and understand what it is saying, you will pass.

I agree with you on the basic network statement, and I'll go along with Cisco jargon; However, I do believe that a few hands on router/switch test questions like telneting to E0 and setting up S0's IP address and copying the config to a TFTP server would make the test a little more interesting (not that it already isn't ). If to many people start passing the test without any hands-on experience, in my opinion the cert may come to have little value..

Good day to all

Seems to me that some people think that all you need to do is study a book and you can pass an exam, this is true for some people but not all

I have found from my experence as an instructor and while pursuing certifications that more than one source of reference is usually required, and yes cisco certs are tough but not impossible to obtain and of course cisco has set the bar high.. but any person who applies him or her self should find that the goal is obtainable... with all the resources out there such as practice exams and the various study guides one should easely be able to obtain the certification..

I also suggest that one should do at least 2 hours aday of studying for at least 2 mths before attempting the exam... the way I see it one should be able to quote the study guides almost from memory before writing the exam

Remember preparation is your best weapon

just my 2 cent worth

I am scared as I am preparing CCNA now.

But anyway, I will read/study/practise as every one here suggested.

I was brand new to Cisco last july. I started taking the Cisco CCNA academy at a local college. I am now in my 4th and last semester. I have already taken my CCNA Cert and Passed. I took it before I finished the 3rd semester. I studied using one Study Guide which I will attach here to this message and I use exam essentials 5.5 and boson. And I passed. I was not good at subnetting. I had a little hands on a cisco 2600 series router and 1900 series switch in class.
It isn't that hard. Unless you have not knowledge of networking or computers.

MAN! I am studying for the CCNA test right now. I have the same materials as they did, I guess I will have to beef up the study materials.

I wish I could get some hands on BUT my job doesnt do much with routers.

I am going to take the test in 2 months top.
Let you all know whats up then......

As far as the material in the first exam, it is not as intense as you would think. It is basic and not heavily involved. There is no expectations for you do design a network, just understand how routing works, how the OSI model works, and how switches work. The other questions are pushed in there to make sure that you didn't fall asleep in the class or miss some reading.

The most problems that I have seen from people taking the test is that they don't want to understand what is going on, they just want the method on how to pass the test. This will work sometimes but understanding will get you through the test with no problems.

Key areas to understand, OSI Model, Subnet Masking, Switching, Routing. The rest like reference points for ISDN and other stuff can be memorized and they need. The core information on network functionality and routing, you really need to understand to not only pass the test but to be able to operate and troubleshoot in a networking environment.

Good luck and hope that this helps someone!!

I agree with you they just want to jump to bandwagon...just for the money.

Yep they fail to realize you must understand the material. You must realize what the question is asking and answer it correctly.

Here is a simple rule:

If you do not know how to set up a simple network with a couple of routers DO NOT TAKE THE EXAM. You are cheating yourself.

Now I take you to the cisco website for thier decription of CCNA

CCNA can install, configure, and operate LAN, WAN and dial access services for small networks.

If you can do this and understand the material take the exam. Do not be afraid of the exam, let this motivate you to take it.

I took the test last Tuesday (8/7/01) and passed, that was my first try ! You can't believe it when you see the "CONGRATULATIONS" banner on the screen! Did very well on Bridging/Swtching, Routing (100%), and Network Protocols. Need to keep brushing up on WAN Protocols and LAN Design. I used Tod Lammle's Study Guide (check the errata, many mistakes on the book, and you'll find some more not listed on the errata) and Routersim. I spent hours and hours going through the 29 labs on the simulator. It doesn't support quite a few of the Cisco IOS commands (like the debug commands)but it covers a lot. You can ping and telnet, configure most of the protocols, access lists, using 6 routers, 2 1900 switches and 4 hosts.
I used this until the commands became natural to me. I visited Cisco's product site many times, there is more information there than you can possibly access in your lifetime. Study, study, and even if you feel you are not ready for the test, there is a point where you got to take it. Don't try to cram up to the last minute (I did that, doesn't help, except to make you more nervous). Take the test when you function regularly better, if you're a morning person, take it in the morning.
I prayed a lot, before and during the test (believe it, you have more than enough time)
Take your time to check every question, then answer it and move ahead.
Good look
