VTP server with 5509...

| sorry, i haven't dug into this yet but wondered if in fact it can be done.
i should be able to set my 5509 to server mode for VTP and then have my 3524/48's run in client mode and get all VLAN information from 5509, right? and then the RSM in the 5509 will route any traffic between them. am i right?
the reason i ask? the 5509 is a set command-based (Layer3) switch whereas the 3500's are IOS. and because of that, all the VLAN configs will be made on the 5509 (set based) but still propagated to the 3500s in a language they understand... right?
so, whatcha think?
currently all switches are stand alone... meaning all of them are in charge of their own VLANS (which we aren't using too much but should). no VTP domains exist at this point. the 3500s aren't even in the same cluster.. they's all alone. all switches are uplinked via GBIC.
i should cluster the 3500s and then make the 5509 the VTP server and the 3500s clients... shouldn't i?
did i ramble? hmm. caffiene?
thnx ppl! | |

I'd say it will work. This is a matter of interoperability, and I doubt Cisco (or anybody else for that matter) builds their devices so that they don't work with each other. There must be a VTP specification somewhere, and the VTP implementations on 55xx and 35xx should conform to it. As for the CLI, it doesn't (or shouldn't) have any influence on the internals of the gear. | |

| thanks D. i was hoping to get a response from the likes of you or Yank/Skip/Strike/etc.
i don't think the management cluster will work across these platforms though, will it? anyone? anyone?
i shall attempt it when i have some time to possibly disrupt things on the network and will report back here with my findings. oh, i will also "RTFM" before that time as well... too busy studying/rolling out ZfD3/Win2kPro and was refreshing the VTP in my "NVRAM" and was trying to apply it to my real-life situation.
