| I have a problem with serial ports on one of the routers at my school!
for some reason they keep on going to down mode even after i type in no shutdown
what happens is teh following
I log on
go into configuratiom mode by typing config terminal
then i type int S0 and give it ip address and subnet mask with the ip address command
the i press enter
after that
i type in no shut down
but as soon as i press ctrl Z
and exit it
it still tells me that Serial0 is down
no idea
please help | |

| You need to let us know what all is being reported, and what you are connecting to.
If another router, one has to be DCE, the other DTE.
Is the line protocol down? Or is the whole port down?
If the port wont come up at all, there normally is a clocking problem. I would start looking at the connectivity issue.

| well the S0
i set it up as a DCE so i also specified clockrate at 56000
and it would still tell me that the protocol is down

You have nothing on the other end to keep it up. Won't work that way.

| Check your cable. I remember having a problem like that once, because I was trying to use an EIA-530 cable at the DCE end. It won't work because EIA-530 cables go only at the DTE end. Here's a quote found somewhere on www.cisco.com:
quote: The EIA-530 interface cannot be operated in DCE mode. A DCE cable is not available for the EIA-530 interface.
Maybe this is your problem, too.
