OSI Transport Layer question...
|

| What's up people? I will be squeezing the knowledge out of your brains for the next couple of months or so. I hope that you don't mind. I'm taking a CCNA course and studying for the exam.
My question is:
One of my books says that the Transport layer of the OSI model communicates with both higher and lower layers using port numbers. Is this the only way communication is done on this layer? What exactly does this mean? I know that there are applications such as Telnet and FTP that must use specific port numbers, is this relevant?
Thank you for your patience everyone.... | |

| Ports are layer 4 addresses of sorts (pretty much the way IP/IPX addresses are layer 3 addresses, and MAC addresses are layer 2 addresses) -- although the whole picture is a bit more complicated.
It's not true that the tranport layer communicates with the upper/lower layer using ports. Ports are used for communication between the transport layer on this host and the transport layer on that host.
Communication between neighboring layers (that is, on the same host) takes place through an interface offered by one of the layers. But I guess these details are way beyond the CCNA scope.

| Thank you for your response. I knew that wording in my study guide was a bit off. Anyway, even though the details may be above the scope of the CCNA, I'm not just gathering this info to pass the exam, I want to fully understand the material and build upon that knowledge to go after the next certification that I choose. For that reason, I would appreciate all answers to my questions, even those not covered in the objectives. | |

Hmm, I thought I answered your question...
Anyway, since you're so willing to go beyond the CCNA curriculum, you may want to take a look at Tanenbaum's Computer Networks book (ISBN 0133499456). Although it was published in '96 -- therefore a bit outdated -- it's an excellent reference.

You did answer my question, my friend! I was referring to any future ones that I might have that may be outside of the objectives of the CCNA. It wasn't a poke at you by any means. Thank you for responding to my original question!

Aah... OK, it was a misunderstanding on my part.
Is that you, in that picture below your username? Just curious, you don't have to answer if you don't want.

| Geez, I goofed, huh?
Truth is, I'm not into rap; I'm more of a rock'n'roll type.
