Big,

I would suggest either the 2900 series switches or the 3500 switches. I have seen 3524-XL-EN switches on eBay go for under $1,000. These are very good switches, and are even gigabit enabled. However, you do need the GBICs to add gigabit. If you cannot get the 3524, get a 2924-XL-EN switch. I happen to remember the cisco part number: ws-c2924c-xl-en.

Strike,
thanks for the suggestions, I do belive I will go for the 3524. I do have another question if I may. what would be the difference between a 3524-XL and 3524-XL-EN or is there a difference, thanks for you help once again

Good. We use the 3524 switches at work and I believe them to be good switches. The EN suffix means "Enterprise Edition"

Enterprise Edition software meets requirements for administering multiple switches in large, distributed networks. Enterprise Edition software provides high capacity links and stackability through Fast EtherChannel (this is cool), and broadcast control through ISL Virtual LAN (VLAN) trunking (also cool). Simply put, they have more features available that you would find in scalable fault-tolerant networks.

I would definitely get a "EN" switch.

Hope this helps.
