Hi there, hope somebody can help me. I have 3640, if i bootup the router, my console will show rubbish display (unreadable words). I'm sure that my cable is good and I'm using 9600,8,1,N. Is my router dead? Help

Try different speeds.

Actually I'd done so many combinations already, but still the same.

Is there a way to reset it to factory default? Or is my flash memory dead?

What Terminal program are you using to connect? The settings you listed are correct, but your symptoms seem to indicate an application\PC connection issue rather then a router problem.

If you can't console in there is no way to do anything with the router except hardware replacement.

You may need to check the settings of your port in windows. In particular the flow settings. I saw this once before and it turned out to be the flow control was set to XON/XOFF, which of course conflicted with hyperterm.

You could try dialing in to the router to see what type of message you get. Just a thought.

thanks for your reply, guys...

i'm using hyperterminal with flowcontrol set to NONE. i think i'd done all the common combinations and replaced the cable itself.

actually it was working fine, but i had a mistake of setting the FE0 with NO IP ROUTING. after i rebooted the router, i no longer am able to access it or even ping it, so i have to console it and correct the config, which i now am having problem ...

Is this an NT box you're consoling from?

Your symptoms looks much like speed mismatch, but judging from your posts you have allready tried the relevant speeds (I think they are 1200, 2400, 4800 and 9600). Somewhere in my mind lurks an idea that the 3640 also supports 19200, but I do not know where I got that wild idea from.

Anyway, there are a few more things to check out.

Something could be wrong with the serial port on your computer. Try another computer, or try this computer on another router.

Keep it simple: I.e. boot from a DOS floppy and run a simple trustworthy terminal program like Telix, Procom or whatever you have available.

Make sure you are using the right kind of cable. One of the cables that comes with the router is for connecting the AUX port to a modem. You want the cable for connecting the CON to a PC serial port. I think there are different colors on them.

The console port is not likely to break unless you connect it to the PSTN or something like that.

did you copy run start, then try doing a hard boot...I had a similar issue a few weeks ago, were I could not console in to a 3660. The Router came back up and I was able to console in. Spoke to Cisco, shortly after , rep thought it was a memory issue, check router sho tech command...Again my issue was similar, I left many parts out of the story, but by no means may it reslve your issue

thanks guys for your support. actually i had a similar experience with stickman. i remember doing a copy run start and then a hard boot. i already called up my vendor to do an RMA, but when i tried it again with 9600,8,1,N, it suddenly worked. that was after turning off the 3640 overnight. the reason why, i don't know, but now i'm happy. thanks again...
