RIP - hop count or ticks

| I have read numerous times that RIP uses hop count.
Then, I take a look at another book and it says that RIP uses "ticks" ( 1/18 of a second )....
Will someone please clarify?

I had jumped to a different section in another book and I remember now that it was a section on IPX.
